| This is a speculative scheme for the pathogenesis of UIP. Some evidence suggests that environmental factors may injure tissue, setting off immune and inflammatory responses that amplify and perpetuate the damage. Cytokines released as part fo the inflammation activate fibroblasts. Because fibroblast migration and division are exaggerated in vitro (compared to fibroblasts from normal lung) after removal from the inflammatory milieu, one may speculate that autocrine secretion of mitogens may occur to perpetuate the process. | |
