Meconium Aspiration

Intrauterine stress can stimulate evacuation of meconium from the fetal intestine. The contaminated amniotic fluid is aspirated and sets up a chemical (sterile) pneumonia. In the center are keratized squamous cells surrounded by inflammation. The eosinophilic material to the left is an exudate of fibrin.
