Desquamative Interstitial Pneumonia

This relatively benign variant of interstitial pneumonia shows modest alveolar wall thickening and many macrophages filling the airspaces. "Dequamation" is a misnomer that arose from misinterpretation of the histology before EMand immunohistochemistry. This disease shows up as ground glass attenuation on CT scans without signs of fibrosis. It progresses very slowly, if at all, and indeed often improves.
