Biography
Dr. Braun is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology in the Program in Public Health. He was formerly a school nurse in Milwaukee, WI before going on to receive his MSPH and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Braun is interested in studying whether early life environmental chemical exposures impact children's health, with a special interest in studying neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD and autism. He is also interested in identifying modifiable sources of environmental chemical exposures in pregnant women and children.
Research Description
I am interested in determining whether environmental chemical exposures during fetal development or early childhood increase the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. The developing fetus and child may be more sensitive to environmental chemicals because of immature detoxification pathways and rapidly developing organ systems. Some environmental chemicals, specifically endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), may impact the developing brain by disrupting endogenous hormone signaling and metabolism to adversely affect brain development and increase the risk of disorders like learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, anxiety, and depression.
I am conducting research in three prospective birth cohorts from the US and Mexico to address several questions. 1) Does gestational exposure to BPA and phthalates alter the prenatal sex steroid levels? 2) Does prenatal exposure to BPA and phthalates increase the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children? 3) What are modifiable sources of BPA and phthalate exposure? 4) How does exposure variability impact our ability to study non-persistent compounds? 5) Does exposure to chemical mixtures affect child brain development?
