Larry Brown's current research interests focus on HIV risk and the efficacy of HIV prevention treatments among subgroups of adolescents such as those with psychiatric disorders. He is the Principal Investigator of several major projects, funded by National Institute of Memtal Health (NIMH), that focus on the relationship between psychopathology and HIV risk behaviors.

Adolescent HIV Prevention Laboratory
Ongoing projects, funded by NIMH and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), target HIV prevention for at-risk adolescents. Studies include analyzing the impact of a 14-session intervention that targets emotions and thoughts for improving at-risk adolescents' safer sexual HIV-preventive behaviors. Another project will demonstrate the impact of a family-based intervention to increase adolescent and parent communication and parental monitoring of adolescent activities. This family-based HIV prevention research is one of the first to target adolescents with severe mental illness and their families. Other studies will examine interventions for juvenile offenders and media-based interventions for community adolescents. In all studies, HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors are targeted through both didactic and skills-based activities. The laboratory provides training in HIV clinical research for clinical psychology interns and post-doctoral fellows.

"HIV, Abuse and Psychiatric Disorders among Youth" Principal Investigator: Larry K. Brown, M.D. Agency: National Institute of Mental Health Type: R01 (MH 61149) Period: 09/30/00 to 8/31/05. $326,877. This project will develop and test the efficacy of an HIV-prevention program that specifically targets the long-lasting effects of sexual abuse on safer sex behaviors among adolescents in intensive treatment settings.

"HIV Prevention for Youth with Severe Mental Illness" Principal Investigator: Larry K. Brown, M.D. Agency: National Institute of Mental Health Type: R01 (MH 63008) Period: 07/01/02 to 06/30/07. $1,099,885. This multisite project with Emory University and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)will develop and test the efficacy of a family-based intervention compared to an adolescent-only intervention and a standard care condition in changing safer sex behaviors among adolescents with psychiatric disorders.

"Family-Based HIV Prevention for Latinos. Research Supplement for Underrepresented Minorities" Principal Investigator: Larry K. Brown, M.D. Agency: National Institute of Mental Health Type: R01 (MH063008-S1) Period: 4/1/04 to 3/31/07. This supplement will allow Dr. Celia Lescano to obtain qualitative data in order to adapt a family-based HIV-prevention intervention that was developed for adolescents with psychiatric disorders for use by Latino families.

"Therapeutic Schools: Affect Management & HIV Prevention" Principal Investigator: Larry K. Brown, M.D. Agency: National Institute of Mental Health Type: R01 (MH 066641) Period: 9/1/03 to 6/30/08. $309,850. This collaborative project with UIC will develop and test the efficacy of an affect management intervention as compared to a skills-based intervention and a general health promotion program in improving safer sex behavior among adolescents with psychiatric disorders in intensive treatment settings. The Affect Management intervention from this project will be adapted for juvenile offenders.

"A Multilevel HIV-Prevention Strategy for High-Risk Youth" Principal Investigator: Larry K. Brown, M.D. Agency: National Institute of Mental Health Type: U01 (MH066785) Period: 9/30/04 to 7/31/09. $204,506. This collaborative project will develop and test a media intervention, in conjunction with group sessions, in reducing sexual risk behaviors among African-American youth in four cities.

"An Affect Management Intervention for Juvenile Offenders" Principal Investigator: Larry K. Brown, M.D. Agency: National Institute of Drug Abuse Type: R21 (DA019245) Period: 10/1/04 to 8/31/06 $185,750 This study will partner with the Juvenile Drug Court to produce a unique intervention that incorporates Affect Management with more traditional skills approaches and to inform the development of a larger study of HIV prevention with drug-abusing juvenile offenders.

Teaching Experience

Dr. Brown is the Program Director a NIMH-funded T-32 posdoctoral program: "Training in Child/Adolescent Biobehavioral HIV Research." It enrolls five fellow in a two-year postdoctoral training position. Predoctoral trainees also participate in a summer research experience.
