2012 Women Senior Faculty Promotions and Appointments in Biology and Medicine
On November 15, 2012, the Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences and the Office of Women in Medicine and Science
in the Division of Biology and Medicine of Brown University sponsored "Celebrating Women Faculty Advancement and
Leadership", a celebration and networking event. The program included the acknowledgement of women faculty
senior promotions and appointments.

External Recognition Programs
2012 Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Awards - Call for Nominations
Each year at its annual meeting, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) presents its major awards
honoring individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the academic medicine community. The
AAMC strives to attract a robust and diverse pool of nominees that appropriately reflects the innovation, creativity,
and diversity of medical education, reserach, and community service missions.
Awards include:
- The ABRAHAM FLEXNER AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO MEDICAL EDUCATION is the highest honor that
academic medicine presents for sustained contributions to American medical education.
The award is a medal and a cash prize of $10,000.
- The ALPHA OMEGA ALPHA ROBERT J. GLASER DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARDS recognize the significant
contributions to medical education made by gifted teachers. Each winner receives a certificate and $10,000;
the awardee's institution receives $2,500; and the awardee's AΩA chapter receives $1,000.
- The AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH IN THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES recognizes exceptional research
discoveries, and consists of a crystal award and $5,000.
- The DAVID E. ROGERS AWARD is granted annually to an individual who has made major contributions to
improving the health and health care of the American people. The Rogers Award, supported by The Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation, is a prize of $10,000 and a crystal presentation piece.
- The HERBERT W. NICKENS AWARD is granted annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions
to promoting justice in medical education and health equity in the United States. The recipient receives a $10,000
award and a crystal presentation piece.
- The ARNOLD P. GOLD FOUNDATION HUMANISM IN MEDICINE AWARD recognizes a physician faculty member who
exemplifies the qualities of a caring and compassionate mentor in the teaching and advising of medical students.
The award is $5,000, with an additional $1,000 for support of Organization of Student Representatives activities
at the nominating institution.
- The SPENCER FOREMAN AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE recognizes longstanding, major
institutional commitment to addressing community needs. The recipient receives an engraved crystal presentation piece.

2013 Alma Dea Morani, M.D. Renaissance Woman Award
The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine (FHWIM) is currently accepting nominations for the 2013 Alma
Dea Morani, M.D. Renaissance Woman Award. This Award will honor an outstanding woman physician or scientist in
North America who has advanced the practice and understanding of medicine in our lifetime and made significant
contributions outside of medicine, for example, in the humanities, arts, or social sciences, whose determination and
spirit have carried her beyond traditional pathways in medicine and science; and who challenges the status quo with
a passion for learning.

2013 Margaret L. Kripke Legend Award for Advancement
and Promotion of Women in Cancer Medicine and Cancer Science

This award was established in honor of Margaret L. Kripke, PhD, for her unwavering advocacy for and promotion of
women in academic medicine and science. The national award is given each year to an individual for her/his ongoing
support and extraordinary dedication to enhancing the careers of women in cancer medicine and cancer science.

The Recognition of the Achievements of Women in Science, Medicine, and Engineering (RAISE) Project
RAISE is a program of the Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR). It "aims to ensure that qualified women
are nominated for top national awards in science, medicine, and engineering," leading to greater recognition of the
achievements of women scientists. Initial programs of RAISE include a web-based listing of national awards,
a web list of women candidates and nominations of outstanding women for selected national awards. The project's
focus is on "identifying women at stages of their professional development where outside recognition is likely to have
