Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology

The Musculoskeletal Oncology Service provides care for patients with bone and soft tissue tumors. Staging and multi-disciplinary treatment of adult and pediatric patients with benign and malignant tumors is emphasized. Surgical treatment includes intralesional procedures for benign bone lesions and wide resections for malignant bone and soft tissue sarcoma. Reconstruction of the extremity or pelvis is performed with contemporary endoprosthetic, allograft, and composite constructs.

Formal teaching rounds are held bimonthly. Didactic lectures are given monthly on specific topics in orthopaedic pathology. Current cases are reviewed in a monthly clinicopathophysiology conference held in conjunction with staff from the radiology and pathology departments. All patients requiring treatment from other services are presented at the weekly adult and pediatric tumor boards at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital respectively.

Extramurally funded basic science research on the molecular genetics of chondrosarcoma is conducted in the Orthopaedic Oncology Research Laboratory. Basic science research experience is available to residents with a commitment to bench research.
