Division of Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular Surgery

The Hand and Upper Extremity service focuses on diseases and trauma of the hand, and disorders of the rest of the upper extremity. Major activities of the service include the management of trauma to the upper extremity, total joint replacement for arthritic diseases, and complex reconstruction of hand deformities. These procedures take place at both Rhode Island Hospital and the Providence V.A. Medical Center.

Cases are discussed weekly at Hand and Upper Extremity rounds by the residents and students on the service, and the three hand surgeons in the Department. Formal presentations of issues relevant to the hand and upper extremity are discussed at bimonthly hand conferences. These conferences vary in format and include formal presentations of invited guest lecturers, videotape and other audio-visual presentations, seminars and literature review.

Many basic and clinical research studies are underway in the Hand and Microsurgery lab on peripheral nerve regeneration and the physiology of replantation and vascularized bone grafts.
