Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery The Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery focuses on deformity, trauma, and diseases of the foot and ankle. This busy service provides much of the foot and ankle care for Southern New England and oversees the daily management of many pathologies which affect foot and ankle function, such as bunion and lesser toe deformities, fracture repair, total joint replacement and fusions for arthritic maladies, arthroscopic management of sports injuries, and complex reconstruction/correction of lower extremity malalignment or diabetic/ neuromuscular disorders. These procedures take place at both The Rhode Island and Miriam Hospitals. A burgeoning foot and ankle educational program at Brown espouses the principles of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society to deliver top quality care to foot and ankle patients and teach residents and students the skills to ensure competent evaluation and treatment of the spectrum of lower extremity disorders they will encounter. Cases are discussed weekly with the Chief of Service, who coordinates the Division’s teaching, research, and clinical care in this subspecialty. Daily rounds presentations are performed by the residents and students on service, who also participate in monthly didactic lectures provided by the staff. In addition to the foot and ankle surgery and care provided by our orthopaedic staff physicians, podiatric care is also offered by four podiatrists in our Department. A monthly foot radiology conference is also held with members of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at Brown, and bi-annual Journal Club meetings are scheduled to discuss both classic topics as well as state-of-the-art technological advances on the horizon for foot and ankle disease. Visitors on the service are encouraged to participate in one of the many ongoing research and laboratory endeavors available, and guest lecturers with expertise in foot and ankle surgery are sometimes invited as orators to share their experiences. Occasionally, regional conferences are held with other academic foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons at neighboring major New England hospitals, which continue to strengthen the educational and supportive relationship enjoyed between members of our subspecialty. |
