Albert Lo, M.D., Ph.D., C.P.H.
Assistant Professor in the Departments of Clinical Neurosciences, Engineering, and Neuroscience, The Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University
Associate Director, Center for Restorative and Regenerative Medicine, Providence VA Medical Center
Dr. Al Lo has joined the management team of the Center and has been appointed an Associate Director. Since joining to the VA in 2001, he has cultivated a knowledgeable base in VA procedures and has attended many Center Directors' meetings, both from Providence and the West Haven VA Healthcare System. Dr. Lo currently possesses a VA Career Development Award entitled, “Clinical Translational Strategies for Neurological Recovery”. This study involves MS patients using a robot-assisted body weight supported motorized treadmill and an ankle robot device as novel interventional devices for the restoration of lower-extremity function. His additional projects include a multi-centered randomized study conducted through the VA Cooperative Studies Program and the VA RR&D Service to test the safety and effectiveness of a robot-assisted device to restore upper-extremity functioning in chronic stroke patients. He currently holds positions on the VA Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence Research Advisory Panel, Brown Biomedical Engineering Executive Advisory Council, and the Executive Steering Committee of the Joy D. and Andrew J. Mandell Multiple Sclerosis Center. Dr. Lo has been awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by the White House Office of Science and Technology. His expertise and interactions with several VA Centers around the country should add greatly to the Center's management capabilities.

John Parkhurst
Administrative Officer
Center for Restorative and Regenerative Medicine, Providence VA Medical Center, Providence, RI
The Center welcomes John Parkhurst to the management team as Administrative Officer. Prior to joining the Center, Mr. Parkhurst served in the Navy from 1976 to 2006 in various positions and, eventually, as senior enlisted leader of the Naval Ambulatory Care Center in Newport, RI. He was then Command Master Chief at the Naval War College from 2002 to 2006. In that position, he served as advisor to the President of the College and was involved in strategic planning and staff coordination. He established a full-time Command Career Counselor position to engage in professional development and advanced training, coordinated assignments of incoming enlisted staff, and detailed internal rotations to exploit expertise and make the most of the available assets. While at the Naval War College he volunteered for deployment to Iraq as advisor to the Iraqi Army Medical Clinic in Taji. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Parkhurst worked as Senior Division Manager at Women and Infants Hospital where he managed human resource responsibilities, budget development, and integrated off-site diagnostic service centers. Mr. Parkhurst will assume a range of managerial responsibilities for the Center and will add substantially to the efficiency and program development as we move into our second period of funding.
