About the Program
The IMSD program at Brown titled "Advancing the culture of PhD learning and scholarship in Biology and Health Sciences" provides funding for students in underrepresented groups to significantly increase the participation of these groups within the fields of biomedical and behavioral research.
This new program will enhance partnerships with Minority-Serving Institutions to encourage and increase opportunities for minority students in biology and public health graduate training fields.
Our program strives for Community, Collaboration, and Excellence in an innovative interactive learning environment. Participants will be identified from incoming PhD cohorts spanning 9 BioMed Graduate Programs. Each student will receive a unique advising plan and support structure, continuing throughout their graduate careers at Brown. Students will participate in special training modules to overcome deficiencies that otherwise may hinder academic achievement and success in graduate school. These training modules will focus on areas such as 'scientific writing', 'demystifying the PhD experience', and 'graphic presentations of biological data'; areas that may not have been fully developed at undergraduate institutions. These modules will be open to other BioMed graduate students, as necessary, to not only enhance the training environment of the direct participants, but also to impact the entire BioMed Graduate community. This program looks to build leverage in order to achieve success with participants reaching their full potential at the end of their graduate career.
