Postdoctoral Research Associates and Fellows
END OF APPOINTMENT/TERMINATION PROCESS:
As you prepare to end your postdoctoral appointment, we have listed a few steps and guidelines that will assist your transition out of Brown:- Please send an email to your mentor and dept. manager stating the details and reason for leaving, and effective END DATE. We will then generate a termination/thank-you letter from the Division.
- If you have accepted another position, please list position details such as the title, department, and institution/facility in your email memo. We will maintain this information to track all postdocs' initial position after leaving Brown.
- You are encouraged to meet with Associate Dean Nancy Thompson for an Exit Interview. Please call the Postdoc Office at (401) 863-1614 to schedule your exit interview. This is a great opportunity to share what you feel are the strengths and weaknesses in postdoctoral training at Brown.
-
You should also have a discussion with your mentor about materials you wish to take from the lab, and come to an understanding of projects that you can continue as your own after leaving, if this might be relevant. Obviously keys, lab notebooks, and the like must remain in the lab.
- International Postdocs -
If you are on a J-1 or H-1B visa and plan to leave PRIOR TO your appointment end date, the Office of International Student Services (OISSS) needs to notify immigration, and you must complete
their Departure Notification Form.
If you have completed your appointment, or will leave Brown at or around the time of the end date listed on your H-1B or J-1, then OISSS does not need to do anything but close out your file.
International postdocs are NOT be entitled to get any social security taxes back, which have been withheld from your paycheckback from the U.S. government, unless you become a U.S. citizen. Please contact OISSS for further information on visa or international issues.
We would like to take this time to thank you for your efforts at Brown, and wish you much success both personally and professionally.
