Among different microbial habitats investigated, the highest density of microbial cells has been observed in the colon. Gut microbes contribute to the hosts’ metabolism, modulate maturation and activity of the immune system and fight against pathogens. In return, the hosts provide gut microbes a habitat that offers a constant supply of nutrients. Colored particles are bacterial cells in the large intestine of a mouse. Each color represents a unique taxonomic group of bacteria. Larger objects are partially digested food particles.
