Plant Fellows- a postdoc fellowship program in plant science co-funded by the Marie Curie Action Cofund and managed by the Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center. The third call is open from February 1- April 30, 2013.

California Science and Technology Policy Fellowships- a one-year professional development opportunity which provides a hands-on experience working with the California Legislature to incorporate science and technology into public policy. Duke University Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development Postdoctoral Research Training Program in Aging - for PhDs and MDs and combines research in the trainee's field of interest with multidisciplinary training in gerontology. Each trainee is matched with one of the center's senior researchers, who supervises his or her research and provides a career model. Deadline: March 1, 2013

National Institutes of Health International Research Scientist Development Award (K01) - Provides US postdocs with an opportunity pursue careers in research on global health, and to prepare them for independent research careers. These awards will support 3-5 years of “protected time” for mentored research and career development experiences, leading to an independent research career focused on global health. Deadline: March 4, 2013; March 4, 2014; March 4, 2015, by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization.

ALS Association Milton Safenowitz Postdoctoral Fellowship for ALS Research – directing, encouraging, identifying, funding and monitoring relevant and cutting-edge research into the cause, treatment, prevention and cure for ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Preliminary data is required and can be data generated in the PI’s laboratory not necessarily generated by the applicant. Association Française contre les Myopathies Postdoctoral Fellowships - supports research which will increase our understanding of the neuromuscular system, encourage the development of therapies for neuromuscular diseases and rare genetic diseases, and improve care and quality of life of patients with neuromuscular diseases. Monsanto Emerging Leaders in Science Rotation Program – Each rotational position is approximately three years in length and involves roles in three different organizations within the Monsanto Technology Organization (with an average length of one year per rotation). Pasteur Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship - brings US postdoctoral researchers to work in any one of the 130+ Institut Pasteur laboratories in Paris. Guided by the institute's administration, which seeks to develop international scientific exchanges to ensure the vitality of Institut Pasteur labs, this program is open to American citizens who are not already in France. Department of Education and National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research Mary Swizer Research Fellowships - awarded to help the nation build future disability and rehabilitation research capacity. Distinguished fellowships are awarded to individuals with doctorates or with comparable academic status who have had seven or more years of experience relevant to rehabilitation research. Deadline: Opened: 01/17/2013 through 03/18/2013

The Epilepsy Foundation's Behavioral Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship - develops excellent behavioral scientists to teach the appropriate psychosocial intervention techniques used in working with people with epilepsy, and contributes to the body of behavioral research in epilepsy. The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation Mentored Clinical Research Award- supports new investigators for a one-year project in patient oriented research in Parkinson’s disease or other parkinsonian disorders under the mentorship of an experienced investigator. American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Science Policy Fellowship - work closely with the Director of Public Affairs Benjamin Corb and participate in a range of science-policy research, communications and advocacy activities. Spend time on Capitol Hill, attending meetings and hearings, agency briefings, seminars, and advocacy coalition sessions. Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program Pilot Award - supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will drive the field of ovarian cancer research forward. Research priorities should include a testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Department of Defense Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program Therapeutic Idea Award - supports early stage research relative to novel therapeutic development for ALS. Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research ProgramBreast Cancer Idea Award - Investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to submit an application. This mechanism supports innovative research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate the eradication of breast cancer. Although groundbreaking research often involves a degree of risk, applications should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Junior Fellowships - 6 to 12 awarded each year. Through the Fellowship programme, scholars are given the opportunity to travel to the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Academic Institution in order to concentrate on a major piece of research, free from the full teaching and administrative obligations of ordinary university life. National Institute of Health K-Series Awards - There are multiple K-series awards to support postdoctoral mentored research, please visit the kiosk to see which is appropriate for you. American Philosophical Society's Franklin Research Grants - These awards are small grants to scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to publication in all areas of knowledge. Funding is offered up to a maximum of $6,000; the program is particularly designed to help meet the costs of travel to libraries and archives for research purposes; the purchase of microfilm, photocopies, or equivalent research materials; the costs associated with fieldwork; or laboratory research expenses. National Geographic Society's Committee for Research and Exploration Grant - All proposed projects must have both a geographical dimension and relevance to other scientific fields and be of broad scientific interest. Applications are generally limited to the following disciplines: anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, biology, botany, geography, geology, oceanography, paleontology, and zoology. In addition the committee is emphasizing multidisciplinary projects that address environmental issues (e.g., loss of biodiversity and habitat, effects of human-population pressures). Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation Novel Approaches to Drug Discovery for Alzheimer's Disease research award program - ADDF funds drug discovery research programs from domestic and international investigators in academia and biotechnology companies. In addition, ADDF initiates, sponsors, and co-sponsors conferences to stimulate new ideas and approaches in areas of interest to the Foundation, bringing together physicians, scientists, and policy makers worldwide. Morton Cure Paralysis Fund- Postdoctoral Research Grants - The MCPF funds activities that hold promise of identifying therapies (cures) for paralysis with particular focus of moving research to clinical trial. The development of effective therapies for chronic injury is a high priority for the organization. Basic research will be supported if it has clear potential to accelerate progress at the applied end of the continuum and/or if it reflects innovative research or a ‘change of direction.’ Either senior scientists or postdoctoral fellows may serve as principal investigators. Hereditary Disease Foundation John J. Wasmuth Postdoctoral Fellowships support research projects that will contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect of Huntington's disease. Areas of interest include trinucleotide expansions, animal models, gene therapy, neurobiology and development of the basal ganglia, cell survival and death, and intercellular signaling in striatal neurons. Deadlines: February 15, June 15 and October 15

American Heart Association Founders Affiliate Postdoctoral Fellowship - This 2-year fellowship helps trainees initiate a career in cardiovascular and stroke research while obtaining significant research results under the supervision of a sponsor or mentor; supports individuals before they are ready for some stage of independent research. Stipend is based on years as a postdoc, with additional allowance for health insurance and travel. (Postdocs on J-1, H-1B, and F-1 Visas Eligible) Deadline: January 28 and July 20, 2012

National Science Foundation International Research and Education: Planning Visits and Workshops - This solicitation describes International Planning Visit/Workshop awards to support the early phases of developing and coordinating a research and education activity with a foreign partner(s).

Cystinosis Research Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship - The fellow's stipend should be the usual amount for such a trainee at that institution. (Nationality Not Specified) Deadlines: April 15 and October 15 annually

Cancer Research Institution Postdoctoral Fellowships - These fellowships attempt to answer the need for more researchers in the field of cancer immunology. It supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in cancer immunology or general immunology. (International Postdocs Eligible) Annual Deadlines: October 1, April 1

American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellowships - This award is to support the training of researchers who have received a doctoral degree to provide initial funding leading to an independent career in cancer research (including basic, preclinical, clinical, cancer control, psychosocial, behavioral, epidemiology, health services and health policy research). Deadlines: October 15, April 1

International Federation of University Women Fellowships and Grants - The International Federation of University Women offers a limited number of international fellowships and grants to women graduates for postgraduate research, study and training. First year doctoral students and those just beginning their research are not eligible. Applicant must be either a regional chapter member or an independant member to apply, and be training in any country other than the one in which the applicant was educated or habitually resides. Amounts of awards vary. (International Students Eligible) Deadlines range from August - October, see site for details. (NO 2012 COMPETITION)

Gordon Research Conferences Carl Storm Underrepresented Minority Fellowship Program - this fellowship offers support towards the conference you choose. While there is no specific deadline, awards are made on a first come first serve basis. Also, while deadlines to register for conferences are generally three weeks in advance, some are different, and most fill up before their deadlines pass.

The Company of Biologists' journals (Development, Disease Models & Mechanisms), Journal of Cell Science, andThe Journal of Experimental Biology) Travelling Fellowships - Fellowships of up to £2,500 or currency equivalent to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers wishing to make collaborative visits to other laboratories. These are designed to offset the cost of travel and other expenses. Applicants should be working in the field of the journal to which they apply and intend to visit another laboratory. (No Nationality Requirements) Deadlines: April 30, August 31, and December 31

Federation for American Societies for Experimental Biology Minority Access to Research Careers Program Travel Awards - Candidates must be US citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanant residents w/a green card and from a qualified underrepresented minority group at the time of application submittal. Applications are due six weeks prior to the conference.

Boehringer Ingleheim Foundation Travel Grants - For junior researchers pursuing experimental projects in basic biomedical research in international locations. Applicants may be non-European citizens if the travel is to a location in Europe.(details on site) A flat-rate contribution is provided which may cover the expenses for travel, lodging and course fees for short-term visits of up to 3 months. Other limitations apply, see site for details. (International Postdocs Eligible) Deadline is at least 6 weeks prior to travel (no more than 6 months early)

External Research Opportunities

Environmental Protection Agency National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory Postdoctoral Research Program - opportunities for conducting high priority research that contributes to protecting human health and the environment. Our primary focus is the effects of contaminants and environmental stressors on human health and ecosystems. Our research spans all levels of biological organization from the genome to populations, communities and ecosystems. The interdisciplinary nature of our research affords numerous opportunities for collaboration with other researchers both inside and outside of EPA. Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory Wiley Visiting Scientist Program - EMSL, a national scientific user facility at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory provides integrated experimental and computational resources for discovery and technological innovation in the environmental molecular sciences to support the needs of DOE and the nation. Two types of visits will be considered under this program: (1) Short term - for visits up to 3 months, with a minimum stay of 1 month, and (2) long term - for visits up to 1 year, with a minimum stay of 6 weeks. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Research Participation Opportunity - opportunities to conduct research in infectious diseases, environmental health, epidemiology, occupational safety and health, exposure and disease registries, health investigations, toxicology, emergency response, public health assessment, and health education. Duration: varies from one month to one year with renewal options; up to four years maximum; full-time or part-time appointments. (International Postdocs Eligible)

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers - Allows you to carry out a long-term research project (6-24 months) you have selected yourself in cooperation with an academic host you have selected yourself at a research institution in Germany. Scientists and scholars of all nationalities and disciplines may apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation directly at any time. The Humboldt Foundation grants approximately 600 Humboldt Research Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers and experienced researchers annually. (International Postdocs Eligible) Open/No Deadline

Oak Ridge National Laboratory Higher Education Research Experiences for Students - opportunities to participate in research in a broad range of science and engineering activities related to basic sciences, energy, and the environment at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tenn. Duration varies with academic level; full-time or part-time appointments. Benefits include weekly stipend (varies with academic level); one round-trip travel reimbursement; housing allowance. National Research Council of the National Academies Research Associateship Programs - This is a listing of many different opportunities Note: some laboratories have citizenship restrictions (open only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents) and some laboratories have research opportunities that are not open to senior applicants (more than 5 years beyond the PhD). The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowships - STRI is a division of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and maintains research facilities for marine and terrestrial research at various locations on the Isthmus of Panama. STRI offers multiple fellowships for postdoctoral research in the areas represented by its scientific staff. Disciplines include ecology, anthropology, paleontology, paleoecology, evolutionary biology, molecular phylogenetics, biogeography, animal behavior, neurobiology, soils sciences, and physiology of tropical plants and animals. Oak Ridge Inst for Science Education / Center for Disease Control Research Participation Opportunity - Under the program, postgraduates, college and university faculty, and students are provided opportunities for hands-on participation in research and development, and related technical activities at the CDC. A participant is appointed to a particular CDC office and is given a specific assignment under a mentor. (US Citizens or J or F visas)
