FEBRUARY
Department of Education and National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research Mary Swizer Research Fellowships - These fellowships are awarded to help the nation build future disability and rehabilitation research capacity. Distinguished fellowships are awarded to individuals with doctorates or with comparable academic status who have had seven or more years of experience relevant to rehabilitation research. Merit fellowships are given to persons in earlier stages of their research careers. Deadline: February 13, 2012 (2013 competition not yet announced)
Link Foundation/Smithsonian Institution 12-week Graduate Fellowships - Applicants must propose to conduct research at the Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce in one of its areas of research in association with a member of the Smithsonian professional research staff (see Specific Research Interests) for a period of 12 weeks at the graduate student level. Fellows will be selected for the significance of the work they propose, their ability to carry out the proposed research and study, and the extent to which the Smithsonian, through its staff members and resources, can contribute to the proposed research. Framework in Global health Scholarships enable students trainees to work on global health research for a minimum of eight weeks at an international site. Deadline: Friday, February 15, 2013.
Interdisciplinary Research Training Institute on Hispanic Drug Abuse Summer Training Program – This program promotes the career development of pre-doctoral, post-doctoral and early career scientists interested in conducting research on drug abuse among Hispanics. Social-behavioral, biological and medical scientists are encouraged to apply. Selected fellows will attend an 11-day interdisciplinary training, led by NIDA funded scientists at the University of Southern California. Resources for the Future Joseph L. Fisher Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships – Proposals from the physical or biological sciences must have an immediate and obvious link to environmental policy matters. This fellowship is intended to be the principal source of support for graduate students in the final year of their dissertation research. Financial assistance must be disclosed to RFF. Fellowship candidates must have completed the preliminary examinations for their doctorate no later than February 1 prior to the application deadline. This requirement will be strictly enforced. Deadline: February 22, 2013.
Pacific Northwest National Labs National Security Internship Program - offers academically superior undergraduate and graduate students the chance to take part in national security-related science. Intern assignment lengths are 10 weeks mimimum for a summer internship—with the option to continue working part-time during the academic year. Internships are renewable, subject to satisfactory academic and research performance. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply for NSIP assignments. Deadline: February 28, 2013
Council on Social Work Education Minority Fellowship Program in Mental Health & Substance Abuse - increase the number of ethnic minorities with doctoral degrees in social work education and to insure their active participation in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of mental health and substance abuse programs that provide culturally competent services to racial and ethnic minorities. California Science and Technology Policy Fellowships place professional scientists and engineers in the California State Legislature for one-year appointments. The fellowships are ideal for qualified applicants who are interested in improving the interface between science and legislative decision-making and who want to learn the public policy decision-making process.
Slater Technology Fund and the NSF's RI Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Entrepreneurial Fellows Program - The commitment is for the period from March through June. The expectation is 10 hours effort per week during the program. Opportunities for extending fellowships past June 2012 will be actively considered. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation along with the Institute of International Education Dissertation Fellowship in Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development - provides both financial and research development support for dissertations on topics that examine how population dynamics and family planning, and reproductive health influence economic development. This can include economic growth, poverty reduction, and equity. Dissertations that address population and development issues pertinent to the African continent are especially encouraged. Association Française contre les Myopathies PhD Fellowships - aims to support research which will 1) Increase our understanding of the neuromuscular system; 2) Encourage the development of therapies for neuromuscular diseases and rare genetic diseases; 3) Improve care and quality of life of patients with neuromuscular diseases. International Foundation for Ethical Research Graduate Fellowship Program - dedicated to the development and implementation of scientifically valid alternatives to the use of animals in research, product testing, and education. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation Pediatric Oncology Student Training Program - dedicated to helping pediatric oncology researchers in every stage of their career. This year we are expanding our programs to include medical and graduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in pediatric oncology research. The POST Program is designed to enable students to gain experience in the lab of an established researcher in the field of pediatric oncology over the summer months. Behavioral Sciences Student Fellowship - stimulates individuals to pursue careers in epilepsy in either research or practice settings. Appropriate fields include sociology, social work, psychology, anthropology, nursing, economics, vocational rehabilitation, counseling, political science, and others relevant to epilepsy research or practice. Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible.
Health Sciences Student Fellowship - stimulates individuals to pursue careers in epilepsy in either research or practice settings. Predoctoral training students in the Health Sciences may be accepted at any point in their schooling-following acceptance but before beginning the first year, or in the period immediately following their final year.

Lady Tata Memorial Trust International Studentship - Awards are restricted to studies of leukaemogenic agents, and the epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunology and genetic basis of leukaemia and related diseases for the Academic Year beginning 1 October. American Association for the Advancement of Science ENTRY POINT! - a program offering outstanding internship opportunities for students with apparent and non-apparent disabilities in science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and some fields of business. AAAS has developed unique partnerships with IBM, NASA, Merck, Google, Lockheed Martin, CVS, NAVAIR, Pfizer, Infosys, Shell, Procter & Gamble and university science laboratories to meet their human resources needs. The Brown Office of International Affairs Graduate International Colloquia Grant - These grants provides an opportunity for graduate students to invite scholars to campus and catalyze discussion on a topic of relevance to their study from an international perspective. These colloquia call on graduate students to collaborate in a year-long exploration or research venture that can promote intellectual growth while contributing to the advancement of learning in engagement with global peers. The colloquium should provide graduate students an opportunity to engage with faculty members, from Brown and elsewhere, in a workshop setting. - NINR Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellows In Nursing Research (F31)(PAR-11-117) - The purpose of this program is to train future generations of outstanding nurse scientists who are committed to research careers in scientific health-related fields relevant to the programmatic interests of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR). This FOA encourages applications from institutions/organizations that propose to increase the number of nurses prepared with a doctoral degree in order to meet the demands for adequately trained behavioral, biological, and biobehavioral scientists. This fellowship program will provide predoctoral training support for doctoral students. The applicant should propose a research training program and dissertation research that is consistent with the scientific mission of the NINR.
International Federation of University Women Fellowships and Grants - The International Federation of University Women offers a limited number of international fellowships and grants to women for doctoral research, study and training. First year doctoral students are not eligible. Applicant must be either a regional chapter member or an independant member to apply, and be training in any country other than the one in which the applicant was educated or habitually resides. ELA Foundation Scholarship - available only to women graduate students with physical disabilities who are enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States. Applicatn must be a member of AAPD. National Institutes of Health Graduate Partnership Program - If you are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program and you would like to perform part or all of your dissertation research at the NIH, consider developing an individual agreement between an NIH Investigator and your graduate university. Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds PhD Fellowships - for outstanding young scientists (max. age: 27 years) who wish to pursue an ambitious PhD project (dissertation research) of approximately 3 years in basic biomedical research in an internationally leading laboratory. The purpose of the fellowships are to promote basic research in biomedicine by providing the best young, up-and-coming scientists with comprehensive support during their PhD phase. European citizens (or non-Europeans studying in Europe) are eligible, the fellowships covers stipend only (2,000 euros/mo in the US) with no tuition support. Ernst Schering Doctoral Fellowship - supports outstanding young scientists who conduct basic research in biology, medicine or chemistry (including related interdisciplinary fields of research). Every year, it awards a total of approximately 7 two-year fellowships to doctoral students who want to carry out research projects at prestigious institutes either at home or abroad. Applicants must have completed their past degree no more than two years prior to the application date, and cannot have started the dissertation research yet. (No Nationality Requirements)

National Science Foundation Social, Economic & Behavioral Sciences Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants - The NSF's Divisions of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences , Social and Economic Sciences, and Science Resources Statistics award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. In an effort to improve the quality of dissertation research, many programs in BCS, SES, and the Research on Science and Technology Surveys and Statistics Program within SRS accept doctoral dissertation improvement grant proposals. Items such as budget limitations, target dates and/or deadlines, page length restrictions, and review procedures vary widely across programs. Travel Awards
The Brown Office of International Affairs Graduate Students International Travel Fund - This fund is available to full time Brown graduate students for assistance in meeting the costs of one professional trip per academic year. The travel stipend can be used for a trip to deliver a paper at an international conference. The Travel Fund is not designed to cover field work. The Requests for a stipend must be made prior to travel, at any time during the academic year by contacting the Graduate Student International Travel Fund at Box 1919, or you may drop off an application at University Hall, Third Floor, suite 301. Federation for American Societies for Experimental Biology Minority Access to Research Careers Program Travel Awards - Candidates must be US citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanant residents w/a green card and from a qualified underrepresented minority group at the time of application submittal. Gordon Research Conferences Carl Storm Underrepresented Minority Fellowship Program - offers support towards the conference you choose. While there is no specific deadline, awards are made on a first come first serve basis. Also, while deadlines to register for conferences are generally three weeks in advance, some are different, and most fill up before their deadlines pass. The Company of Biologists' journals (Development, Disease Models & Mechanisms, Journal of Cell Science, andThe Journal of Experimental Biology) Travelling Fellowships - Fellowships of up to £2,500 or currency equivalent to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers wishing to make collaborative visits to other laboratories. These are designed to offset the cost of travel and other expenses. Applicants should be working in the field of the journal to which they apply and intend to visit another laboratory. Boehringer Ingleheim Foundation Travel Grants - For junior researchers pursuing experimental projects in basic biomedical research in international locations. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Graduate Fellowships - STRI is a division of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and maintains research facilities for marine and terrestrial research at various locations on the Isthmus of Panama. STRI offers multiple fellowships for graduate research in the areas represented by its scientific staff. Disciplines include ecology, anthropology, paleontology, paleoecology, evolutionary biology, molecular phylogenetics, biogeography, animal behavior, neurobiology, soils sciences, and physiology of tropical plants and animals. National Geographic Society Waitt Grants Application - This program funds projects that require venture capital, supporting exceptional projects while foregoing a time-consuming peer-review process. NGS/Waitt grants are able to fund "proof of concept" research for applicants at an earlier stage in their careers than other NGS grant programs. Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences Graduate Research Internship Program is designed to allow graduate students to pursue thesis or dissertation research. The resources and environment of BIOS are most suited to students interested in biological and oceanographic studies of subtropical, shallow-water environments, and the open ocean. Graduate interns at BIOS must be enrolled in a Ph.D. or M.S. program at an accredited university. All applicants must have a BIOS faculty member accept their research proposal, and get approval from their Brown University mentor to proceed, see site for details. While there are no additional deadlines specified by these graduate programs, the applications are due to the grants offices (OSP/BMRA) no later than 5 days prior to the grant submission dates. We strongly recommend giving at least 5 additional days notice to the administrator coordinating the submission. Late submissions to OSP/BMRA require the approval of both the VP for Research and the Dean of BioMed to be processed.
