Doctoral Programs in Biology and Public Health

The Division of Biology and Medicine at Brown offers nine doctoral programs covering virtually every area of biomedical research. In addition, students admitted to the MD/PhD program, which allows medical students to pursue intensive research work, may earn their PhD in any of our doctoral programs. Financial Support for Doctoral Students

As of academic year 2006-2007, all incoming doctoral students are guaranteed five years of support, contingent up on their making satisfactory academic progress as determined by their programs of study. Most students complete their doctorates in six years or less. Support is provided through a combination of Divisional fellowships, teaching appointments, and research assistantships.
The support package for '08 - '09 includes:

  • $26,000 minimum annual stipend
  • Full-time tuition remission ($36,928)
  • Health insurance subsidy ($2,512)
  • Health services fee ($626)
  • Funding is also available for conference travel

There is also funding available in the form of a Predoctoral Student External Fellowship Bonus Policy.

In addition, our students have also been successful in securing prestigious external fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and a variety of private foundations. Please email program personnel for details.

  • 17 December: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, MPP, Neuroscience
  • 3 January: EEB, MCB, Pathobiology
  • Rolling, but first week in January recommended: BME
