Increasing Diversity in Biology and Medicine

The Division of Biology and Medicine at Brown University is committed to increasing and supporting the diversity of its graduate and postdoctoral trainees, and encourages members of underrepresented minority groups and individuals with disabilities to apply for admission to its graduate programs and postdoctoral positions. There are a number of training grants within the Division that help to facilitate funding for these individuals. Brown University offers numerous resources for members of these underrepresented groups, which can be found at the websites for the Office for Institutional Diversity and Student and Employee Accessibility Services, described below.

Support for Members of Underrepresented Minority Groups at Brown

The Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) at Brown, headed by the associate provost and director of institutional diversity is committed to increasing and supporting the diverse population of Brown University students, faculty and staff. The office provides leadership for the formulation and oversight of policies related to pluralism and equity, and initiate programs and practices that promote diversity, inclusion and fair treatment of all members of the community. At Brown, we seek to achieve diversity in our living, learning and working environments by placing emphasis on the recruitment and retention of students, faculty and staff from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. We also work to ensure diversity in our curricular and co-curricular offerings, and we invest in the structural supports needed to manage our lively, provocative, and stimulating community.

Disability Support for Graduate and Postdoctoral Trainees at Brown

Student and Employee Accessibility Services (SEAS) coordinates services within Brown University for individuals with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities. Offices throughout the University provide accommodations and services for these individuals. Anyone requesting an accommodation should register with SEAS. Registering with SEAS will not only allow the University to make appropriate accommodations for the individual, but there may also be a benefit for students and faculty seeking fellowship or grant opportunities, as they can then be identified as members of underrepresented groups. Every effort is made to insure the applicant’s privacy in this process, and any concerns regarding the confidentiality of the individual’s information can be discussed with SEAS at any point. Requests for accommodation are evaluated individually and must include a Registration Form as well as current documentation of the area of disability before they can be processed. To start the registration process, please email dss@brown.edu or call 401-863-9588 (V/TTY).
