Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Directorate for Biological Sciences – National Science Foundation (NSF) - The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research to improve the overall quality of research. Allowed are costs for doctoral candidates to participate in scientific meetings, to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings, and to expand an existing body of dissertation research.

The DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE SCGF) Program will support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S. The Fellowship award provides partial tuition support, an annual stipend for living expenses, and a research stipend for full-time graduate study and thesis/dissertation research at a U.S. academic institution for three years.

(International Students Eligible) AAUW (American Association of University Women) International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported. Several fellowships are available for study outside of the U.S.

United Negro College Fund(UNCF) Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships will help African American graduate students complete coursework, conduct research, and prepare the dissertation required for a doctoral degree in the biomedically relevant life or physical sciences.

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) - This program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities (see below) to first or second year students pursuing a PhD in scientific or engineering disciplines with an emphasis in high-performance computing. The AAAS Fellows use their academic training in the sciences as they research, write, and report today’s headlines, sharpening their abilities to communicate complex scientific and technical issues to non-specialists.

(International Students Eligible)Raymond J. Tarleton Student Fellowship- This new graduate student fellowship has been established by Raymond J. Tarleton, past executive vice president of APS, with the assistance of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) Foundation. The award was initiated to support graduate students in plant pathology research and to encourage students to further their careers in plant pathology.

United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS) Fellowshi program - Established in 1986 to encourage students to pursue environmental careers. The NNEMS program is a comprehensive fellowship program that provides students an opportunity to participate in a fellowship project that is directly related to their field of study.

Ethics Education in Science and Engineering- National Science Foundation (NSF) - The Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE) program accepts proposals for research and educational projects to improve ethics education in all of the fields of science and engineering that NSF supports, especially in interdisciplinary or inter-institutional contexts.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring - National Science Foundation (NSF) - The PAESMEM Program seeks to identify outstanding mentoring efforts that enhance the participation of groups (i.e., women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER)- Graduate Fellowship Program. IFER is dedicated to the development and implementation of scientifically valid alternatives to the use of animals in research, product testing, and education. The purpose is to provide monetary assistance to graduate students whose programs of study seem likely to have an impact in one or more of these areas.

NSF Developing Global Scientists and Engineers- Doctoral Dissertation Enhancement Projects (DDEP)

The American Foundation for Aging Research (AFAR) was established to promote the health and welfare of the mature individual and to increase knowledge about the biological aspects of aging by encouraging and promoting scientific research and educational opportunities in the field. It is the only organization supporting education and research in aging through fellowships to graduate and undergraduate students. The awards cover $1,000 fellowships to graduates nationwide, or $500 fellowships for neurological cancer research and graduate research.

- AHRQ Grants for Health Services Research Dissertation Program (R36) The overall goal of the AHRQ grants for Health Services Research Dissertation Program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained health services researchers is available in adequate numbers and appropriate research areas to address the research mission and priorities of AHRQ, noted below. - NHLBI Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral MD/PhD Fellows (F30)- The(NHLBI) is interested in supporting individual predoctoral fellowships for combined MD/PhD training in research areas relevant to the mission of the NHLB, to provide leadership for national programs in diseases of the heart, blood vessels, lung, and blood; blood resources; and sleep disorders.
- Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral MD/PhD and Other Dual Doctoral Degree Fellows (F30)- The purpose of the Kirschstein-NRSA F30 is to provide support to individuals for combined MD/PhD and other dual doctoral degree training (e.g. DO/PhD, DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD). The participating Institutes award this Kirschstein-NRSA individual fellowship (F30) to qualified applicants with the potential to become productive, independent, highly trained physician-scientists and other clinician-scientists, including patient-oriented researchers in their scientific mission areas.

Kirschstein Individual PreDoc Fellowships (F31) - The participating Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide individual predoctoral research training fellowship awards to promising doctoral candidates who have the potential to become productive, independent investigators in research fields relevant to the missions of these participating NIH Institutes and Centers.
- Ruth L. Kirschstein Individual PreDoc Fellowships (F31) To Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research- The primary objective of this funding opportunity announcement is to help ensure that diverse pools of highly trained scientists will be available in appropriate research areas to carry out the Nation’s biomedical, behavioral, health services, or clinical research agenda. This initiative seeks to improve the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting the training of predoctoral students from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented.
(International Students Eligible) The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Graduate Fellowships - STRI is a division of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and maintains research facilities for marine and terrestrial research at various locations on the Isthmus of Panama. STRI offers multiple fellowships for graduate research in the areas represented by its scientific staff. Disciplines include ecology, anthropology, paleontology, paleoecology, evolutionary biology, molecular phylogenetics, biogeography, animal behavior, neurobiology, soils sciences, and physiology of tropical plants and animals.

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35)–National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The objectives of the omnibus T35 program are to develop or enhance research training opportunities for individuals interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical research. The program may also be used to support other types of predoctoral and postdoctoral training in focused, often emerging scientific areas relevant to the mission of the NIH funding Institute or Center.
