AERA Dissertation Grants Program - AERA invites education policy- and practice-related dissertation proposals using NCES, NSF, and other national data bases. Grants are available to support the student while writing the doctoral dissertation. Applications are encouraged from a variety of disciplines, such as but not limited to, education, sociology, economics, psychology, demography, statistics, and psychometrics.
Deadlines: September 1, 2009 (tentative) to be reviewed in October

Partnerships for International Research and Education– National Science Foundation (NSF) –The program will enable U.S. scientists and engineers to establish collaborative relationships with international colleagues in order to advance new knowledge and discoveries at the frontiers of science and engineering and to promote the development of a diverse, globally-engaged U.S. scientific and engineering workforce.

PhRMA Foundations Pre Doctoral Fellowships in Health Outcomes - The PhRMA Foundation Post Doctoral program in health outcomes provides stipend support for individuals engaged in a research training program that will create or extend their credentials in health outcomes.

PhRMA Foundations Pre Doctoral Fellowships in Pharmaceutics - The PhRMA Foundation recognizes the critical need for such well-trained scientific investigators. Accordingly, it wishes to encourage more qualified graduates to obtain postdoctoral research training in pharmaceutics.

PhRMA Foundations Paul Calabresi Medical Student Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology - The fellowship is offered to medical or dental students who have substantial interests in research and teaching careers in pharmacology - clinical pharmacology and who are willing to spend full-time in a specific research effort within a pharmacology or clinical pharmacology unit. Fellowships are available for a minimum period of six months or any period of time up to 24 months with a maximum stipend of $18,000. The commitment must be full-time. Awards may be activated beginning June 1, 2010 or on the first day of any month thereafter, up to and including August 1, 2010. The student may undertake this investigative effort at their own school or at another institution.

Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities (INRO) The INRO program seeks students from populations underrepresented in biomedical research or financially disadvantaged backgrounds desiring placements at the Institute to conduct research in allergy, immunology, or infectious diseases.
The 4-day exploratory program takes place in Bethesda, MD, on the NIH campus, February 1–4, 2010. Student expenses for travel, hotel accommodations, and meals will be paid.
Selected applicants will:

• Interview with scientists for potential research training positions.
• Hear scientific lectures from world-renowned scientists.
• Tour Institute laboratories and see the state-of-the-science technologies.

Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program - The Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program of the National Academies is designed to engage graduate science, engineering, medical, veterinary, business, public policy, and law students in the analytical process that informs the creation of national policy-making with a science/technology element. As a result, students develop basic skills essential to working in the world of science policy.

The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships -- Predoctoral Awards - Through its program of Diversity Fellowships, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
Deadline: November 2, 2009

Graduate Research Fellowship Program– National Science Foundation (NSF) - The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,654 graduate fellowships in this competition pending availability of funds. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study.

The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships -- Dissertation Awards - This year the program will award approximately 20 dissertation fellowships. The dissertation fellowships provide one year of support for individuals working to complete a dissertation leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree.

The Entrepreneurial Fellows Program is designed to encourage entrepreneurship in the life sciences and biotechnology in Rhode Island. It also supports emerging industries in the state through the Slater Technology Fund. Graduate students and upper-class undergraduates currently enrolled in participating RI NSF EPSCoR schools are eligible. The program will start in December and continue through the remainder of the academic year.

Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems- National Science Foundation (NSF) - The Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems competition promotes quantitative, interdisciplinary analyses of relevant human and natural system processes and complex interactions among human and natural systems at diverse scales.

Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Directorate for Biological Sciences – National Science Foundation (NSF) - The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research to improve the overall quality of research. Allowed are costs for doctoral candidates to participate in scientific meetings, to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings, and to expand an existing body of dissertation research.

The DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE SCGF) Program will support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S. The Fellowship award provides partial tuition support, an annual stipend for living expenses, and a research stipend for full-time graduate study and thesis/dissertation research at a U.S. academic institution for three years.

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) - This program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities (see below) to first or second year students pursuing a PhD in scientific or engineering disciplines with an emphasis in high-performance computing. Ethics Education in Science and Engineering- National Science Foundation (NSF) - The Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE) program accepts proposals for research and educational projects to improve ethics education in all of the fields of science and engineering that NSF supports, especially in interdisciplinary or inter-institutional contexts.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring - National Science Foundation (NSF) - The PAESMEM Program seeks to identify outstanding mentoring efforts that enhance the participation of groups (i.e., women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER)- Graduate Fellowship Program. IFER is dedicated to the development and implementation of scientifically valid alternatives to the use of animals in research, product testing, and education. The purpose is to provide monetary assistance to graduate students whose programs of study seem likely to have an impact in one or more of these areas.

  • AHRQ Grants for Health Services Research Dissertation Program (R36) The overall goal of the AHRQ grants for Health Services Research Dissertation Program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained health services researchers is available in adequate numbers and appropriate research areas to address the research mission and priorities of AHRQ, noted below.  This announcement represents the continuation of an AHRQ program that provides support to individuals who are conducting research undertaken as part of an academic program to qualify for a research doctorate degree.
  • Mental Health Dissertation Research Grant to Increase Diversity (R36) The purpose of this funding opportunity is to increase the diversity of the mental health research workforce.  It will enable qualified doctoral candidates to pursue research careers in any area relevant to the research mission of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
  • Aging Research Dissertation Awards to Increase Diversity (R36) The National Institute on Aging (NIA) announces the reissuance of a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) that provides dissertation awards (R36) in all areas of research within NIA’s mandate to increase diversity of the research workforce on research on aging and aging-related health conditions.
F31 Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award (NRSA)- Annual Deadlines: April 8, Aug. 8, Dec. 8 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35) –National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The objectives of the omnibus T35 program are to develop or enhance research training opportunities for individuals interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical research. The program may also be used to support other types of predoctoral and postdoctoral training in focused, often emerging scientific areas relevant to the mission of the NIH funding Institute or Center.
