Biography

Kathy Takayama's interests are in: i) the regulation of RNA processing mechanisms; ii) visualizations in science education; iii) hybrid pedagogies and epistemologies that evolve through the integration of art + science; and iv) the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL). She holds a B.S. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She was an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow from 1991–1993 in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Madison-Wisconsin. From 1994-2007 she was a faculty member of the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Takayama joined the Sheridan Center for Teaching & Learning at Brown in 2007 as the Associate Director for Life & Physical Sciences and is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry. She has delivered keynotes on her research in visualizations and the scholarship of teaching and learning (Gordon Conference on Visualizations and Science Education, Oxford University; The SoTL Commons Conference, Georgia Southern University). Together with visual artist John Nicholson, she has had a solo exhibit at the Canberra Contemporary Arts Space in Australia. Dr. Takayama is a Carnegie Scholar and a founding member of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. She serves on the National Steering Committee of the NSF Biology Scholars Program, and Co-Chairs the Biology Scholars Writing Residency Program. In 2008 she was named National Academies Education Fellow in the Life Sciences by the National Research Council. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education and the International Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Takayama also serves on the Curriculum Development Advisory Board for College Board AP Biology.
