Biography

Kristina M. Jackson received her graduate training (PhD in 1997) in applied social psychology at Arizona State University, with an emphasis on quantitative methods and their application to health-related behaviors through analysis of both epidemiological and experimental intervention data. Upon graduation, she took a position as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and as a Research Assistant Professor thereafter. Dr. Jackson joined the faculty at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies in 2005.

Dr. Jackson has expertise in the developmental course of alcohol use in late adolescence and young adulthood. She currently holds a five-year R01 grant from NIAAA to examine the initiation of alcohol use and progression through early drinking milestones among middle schoolers, with particular focus on the contextual influences on these important transitions. She has been funded by NIAAA to examine the methodological factors that are critical to characterizing the developmental course of alcohol involvement and to explore the relations between alcohol use, tobacco use, mood, and stress using daily process data. Dr. Jackson is the 2004 recipient of the Young Investigator's award from the Addiction Research Institute Rotterdam and is the 2006 recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the Research Society on Alcoholism.

Research Description

Kristina M. Jackson, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Community Health at Brown University. She received her graduate training in applied social psychology at Arizona State University, with an emphasis on quantitative methods and their application to health-related behaviors through analysis of both epidemiological and experimental intervention data. Upon graduation, she took a position as a postdoctoral research associate with Dr. Kenneth J. Sher at the University of Missouri – Columbia (MU), where she developed interests in the application of quantitative methods to the study of alcohol use and dependence, the study of alcohol-tobacco comorbidity, and examination of the developmental course of drinking among adolescents and young adults. She continued on at MU as a Research Assistant Professor for the next six years. Dr. Jackson joined the faculty at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University in 2005. In July 2008, she was promoted to Associate Professor (Research).

She has a successful history of obtaining grant funding, including two R21 grants, an R01 grant, an Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation (ABMRF) grant, and a K01 award. She has made substantial contributions to several other grants across multiple funding mechanisms, including R01, R21, R34, P60, K01, and T32 applications. In all, she has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, more than half of them first-authored, has published largely in very high-quality journals, and has authored or co-authored several book and monograph chapters.

Dr. Jackson's productivity and commitment to the alcohol field has been recognized at both the national and international level. In 2004, she received the Young Investigator Award by the Addiction Research Institute Rotterdam (IVO) (awarded biennially). In 2006, she was awarded the Young Investigator Award from the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA). This prestigious award, which is given on an annual basis, recognizes research excellence by an early-stage researcher in the field.

Dr. Jackson serves on the editorial board of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors and is a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. She has been an ad hoc reviewer for 31 different journals. She has served on numerous NIH Internal Review Committees, and was a standing member of the CSR Community Influences on Health Behavior (CIHB) Study Section for five years. She was a member of the Research Priorities Committee and the Program Committee for RSA and served as consultant to the Alcohol Epidemiologic Data System (AEDS) contract by NIAAA.

Dr. Jackson's substantive research area is in the developmental course of alcohol involvement throughout late adolescence and young adulthood. This research was originally motivated by the question of why some individuals continue to drink heavily throughout young adulthood whereas others "mature out." This initial work has now evolved into a broader inquiry of the characteristics of the early drinking career, from initiation and early drinking experiences through the progression to heavier drinking. She is currently funded by NIAAA to examine alcohol involvement in a middle-school sample (R01 AA016838). The overall goal of this study is to identify milestones demarcating drinking stages as well as stage-specific risk factors beginning with first drink and continuing to alcohol problems.

Dr. Jackson also has research interests in examining behaviors comorbid with alcohol use/alcohol use disorders, especially tobacco use and in the analysis of fine-grained process and daily diary data.
