Biography

Silvia Degli Esposti, MD, is director of the Center for Women's Gastrointestinal Medicine at the Women's Medicine Collaborative. She is an associate professor of medicine (clinical) at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and director of the fellowship pathway in women's gastrointestinal diseases at Alpert Medical School. Degli Esposti graduated summa cum laude from the University of Bologna Medical School in Bologna, Italy. She completed her residency and fellowship at Brown University.

She was the director of the Division of Gastroenterology and the gastrointestinal disorders in pregnancy clinic at Women & Infants before moving to the Women's Medicine Collaborative.

Degli Esposti is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Her clinical and research interests include liver disease and gastrointestinal diseases in women. She is currently leading several studies in inflammatory bowel disease and hepatitis in pregnancy.

Dr. Degli Esposti is an active staff member of not only Women & Infants Hospital, but of Roger Williams Medical Center, Kent County Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital and Miriam Hospital.

Dr. Degli Esposti has written numerous publications. Her current publications include a chapter written for the 5-Minute Consult Clinical Companion to Women's Health on Cirrhosis and a chapter written for the American College of Physician's textbook Medical Care of the Pregnant Patient, 2nd Edition entitled "Liver Disease in Pregnancy".

Her teaching roles include Director of the Women's Gastrointestinal Disorder (Fellowship Tract) at Brown University, Course Director of the Elective for Gastroenterology Fellowship at Brown University Medical School entitled "Gastroenterology in Women's Health and Pregnancy", Small Group Leader of the Patholophysiology of the GI Tract and Liver – Bio 282. She is a mentor for the Obstetric Medicine and Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program and heads the elective for the Gastroenterology Fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital.

March 2009 The Rhode Island Perinatal Hepatitis Prevention Program, a collaborative effort of Women & Infants Hospital (Center for Women's Gastrointestinal Services), Hasbro Children's Hospital, the VNA of Care New England, and the Rhode Island Department of Health, was recently recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rhode Island has the highest immunization rate in the country – 95% for three doses in the first eight months of life – of infants born to women with hepatitis B.

Funded Research

Title: A Multi-center National Prospective Study of Pregnancy and Neonatal Outcomes in Women with IBD (IBD in Pregnancy)
Funding: Crohn's Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA)
Summary: This study is conducted to determine whether the rates of birth defects, miscarriages, premature births, and other outcomes in women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) exposed to azathioprine/6MP or anti TNF therapy (Remicade, Humara, Cimzia) are greater than those among IBD affected women not taking these medications. The secondary purpose of this study is to create a national prospective pregnancy registry among members of the CCFA Clinical Research Alliance to study pregnancy and neonatal outcomes.
Patients are identified by the GI practice at Women & Infants' Hospital.
