Secondary Appointments Between Two Warren Alpert Medical School Clinical Departments

  • Each faculty member is recruited with a primary appointment in a Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University Department. Secondary appointments can be considered when a clincial department wishes to recruit an individual with the intent of meaningful interactions with another clinical department. • Have major responsibility for a regularly scheduled educational activity for trainees (post-graduate trainees and/or medical students) for which the Department granting the secondary appointment has primary responsibility. Evaluations relating to this teaching role are to be included in the faculty member's dossier at the time of reappointment or promotion.

The Department of the faculty member's primary appointment retains responsibility for the administration of faculty actions for the jointly appointed faculty. The secondary Department must concur in writing with reappointment or promotion decisions of the primary Department. If such concurrence cannot be obtained, the faculty person will not be eligible for retaining a secondary appointment. Memos from both departments should be included in any recommendation submitted to BMFA.

  • The primary and secondary appointment must be at the same faculty rank and will carry the same term end date as the primary department appointment.
  • Department recommendations will be forwarded to the Office of BioMed Faculty Affairs who will process the faculty action at the University level.
  • These provisions for secondary appointment faculty actions are supplementary and will not in any way alter the approved Departmental procedures for faculty actions in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University or the Program in Biology.
