The Division's chief priority is to support medical students, enabling a pipeline of top-notch physicians. Brown is also committed to supporting students in biology and public health.

Major giving opportunities to:

  • Any of the below giving opportunities can be directed toward two special initiatives: Medical Scholarships for Underrepresented Minorities or Medical Scholarships for Women.

    Endowed Full Tuition Scholarship Fund         $1,000,000
    A gift of $1,000,000 will establish an endowed, named fund that will provide full tuition for one student for their four years at Alpert Medical School.

    Benefactor's Endowed MD/PhD Student Scholarship         $1,000,000
    A gift of $1,000,000 will establish a Benefactor's Endowed MD/PhD Student Scholarship, which will provide significant and ongoing scholarship support to aspiring physician-scientists. The gift will help Brown attract top students to the program and enable MD/PhD graduates—freed from the pressure to pay back high levels of debt—to enter research.

    Endowed Tuition Scholarship Fund         $500,000
    A gift of $500,000 will establish an endowed, named fund that will provide half tuition for one student for their four years at Alpert Medical School.

    Endowed MD/PhD Student Scholarship $500,000
    A gift of $500,000 will establish an Endowed MD/PhD Student Scholarship, which will provide ongoing scholarship support to aspiring physician-scientists.

    Current Use MD/PhD Student Scholarship         $250,000
    A current use gift of $250,000 (pledged over up to five years) will provide scholarship support to aspiring physician-scientists.

    Endowed Medical Scholarship         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 or more will establish a named, endowed scholarship that will exist in perpetuity to provide financial aid to a qualifying medical student.

    BMAF Term Scholarship         $15,000
    Donors may choose to support a term scholarship through the Brown Medical Annual Fund (BMAF). A gift of $15,000 (paid within one annual fund year) will support one medical student for one academic year.

  • Endowed Postdoctoral Research Fellowships         $1 million
    A gift of $1 million would establish a named fund to support a postdoctoral research fellow in the Program in Biology.

    Endowed Graduate Fellowships         $500,000
    A gift of $500,000 would establish a fellowship to provide a stipend for a graduate student within the Program in Biology.

    Endowed Flexible Support Fund for Graduate Students        $250,000
    A gift of $250,000 would establish a named fund that would provide research funding or support in the form of a stipend to a graduate student in the Program in Biology.

    Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship         $250,000
    A gift of $250,000 would establish a named, endowed scholarship that will exist in perpetuity to provide financial aid to a qualifying biology student at the undergraduate level.

    Endowed Undergraduate Financial Aid Fund         $100,000
    An gift of $100,000 would establish an endowed fund to help underwrite for biology students the University's financial aid objectives, supporting assistance to need-based financial aid.

    Endowed Student Teaching and Research Award         $50,000
    A gift of $50,000 will endow an award for an undergraduate or graduate student, providing funding for research and/or teaching activities in biology.

  • Endowed Postdoctoral Research Fellowships         $1 million
    A gift of $1 million would establish a named fund to support a postdoctoral research fellow in any of the Public Health research centers.

    Endowed Graduate Fellowships — Doctoral Level         $500,000
    A gift of $500,000 would establish a fellowship to provide a stipend for a graduate student pursuing doctoral-level work within public health.

    Endowed Graduate Fellowships — Master's Level         $250,000
    A gift of $250,000 would establish a named graduate fellowship in public health that would help offset the cost of tuition for a master's student. Such funds will allow Brown to attract — and compete for — the brightest new talent for its master's programs in public health.

    Endowed Financial Aid Fund—Master's Level         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 will establish a named, endowed scholarship that will exist in perpetuity to provide financial aid to a qualifying MPH or MS student.

    Endowed Student Teaching and Research Award         $50,000
    A gift of $50,000 will endow an award for an undergraduate or master's student, providing funding for research and/or teaching activities within public health.

    Public Health Annual Fund Term Fellowship         $25,000
    With a gift of $25,000 or more to the Brown Public Health Annual Fund, a donor can establish a named term fellowship for one year. A specific student will be named to the term fellowship, and biographical information will be provided to the donor. Term fellowships provide an opportunity for a donor to have direct impact on a public health scholar.

Expand Medical Knowledge

Brown's biomedical researchers are working to advance understanding of basic science and human health. They are discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat the most devastating human diseases.

  • Endowed Deanship         $5 million
    An endowment gift of $5 million would create a fund to help underwrite the position of dean of biology and medicine.

    Endowed Center Directorship         $5 million
    A gift of $5 million would endow, with a named fund, the director of a multidisciplinary center, institute, initiative, or program based in the Medical School and focused on a particular area of importance, such as global health or AIDS research. This fund would help underwrite the activities of the center.

    Endowed University Professorships         $4 million
    A gift of $4 million will create a named endowed fund to help the University attract and retain the most distinguished scholars and researchers in medicine.

    Endowed Professorships         $3 million
    A gift of $3 million will establish a named endowed fund to help Brown reward the accomplishments of current faculty in medicine and to attract outstanding scholars to the University.

    Endowed Assistant Professorships         $2 million
    A gift of $2 million will help Brown retain the most promising scholar-teachers in the junior faculty. Such a gift would endow a fund to be awarded to outstanding tenure-track scholars currently on the faculty, usually in the second term of their appointment.

    Endowed Seed Funding         $1 million
    Increasingly, the federal government and other funders require substantial initial data before providing funding for larger-scale projects. A gift of $1 million for an endowed research seed fund would help procure the initial data needed to seek grants from the NIH or other external funding sources.

    Endowed Teaching Fund         $250,000
    A gift of $250,000 will create an endowed fund that will support the teaching of one or more courses at Alpert Medical School, helping to underwrite the work of outstanding faculty, supporting course development, curricular innovations, and the development of teaching technologies.

    A current use gift of $250,000 would provide the seed funding needed to procure initial research data, which is required to seek grants from the NIH or other external funding sources.

    Current Use Dean's Innovation Fund         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 will provide discretionary current use funding to the Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences to support innovative programs in education and research.

    Current Use Flexible Research Fund         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 will provide current use funding for research in medicine.

Improve Population Health

Brown is leading efforts to understand and solve the world's most pressing health issues through public health research and outreach.

Major giving opportunities to:

  • Name the School of Public Health
  • A $50 million gift to name the School of Public Health will propel Brown toward the achievement of its ambitious goals for its public health enterprise. Like other preeminent schools named for donors—Bloomberg at Johns Hopkins University, Rollins at Emory University, Mailman at Columbia University—Brown's School of Public Health and its benefactor would enjoy national recognition for excellence in education and research. The opportunity to name Brown's School of Public Health represents one of the most prestigious and prominent funding possibilities available at Brown University. A naming gift will catapult Brown's School of Public Health—and the field of public health itself—to a level simply unreachable without such generosity. The gift will accelerate education, scientific discovery, and outreach, and position Brown's enterprise to become one of the great schools of public health in the nation. It will enable the University to build upon its research strengths and to fulfill strategic priorities designed to raise the level of health care quality.

  • Name a Public Health Center or Institute
  • $10 million and up will name a Public Health Center focused on a critical area of public health, such as environmental health or aging.

    A current use gift of $5 million and up will create and name an initiative in a critical area of public health, such as prevention or child and maternal health. The initiative will launch aligned and high-impact efforts—including public health education, policy-relevant service, and novel, high-risk, high-reward research—aimed at advancing health and health policy in this area.

  • Support public health students
  • Endowed Postdoctoral Research Fellowships         $1 million
    A gift of $1 million would establish a named fund to support a postdoctoral research fellow in any of the Public Health research centers.

    Endowed Graduate Fellowships — Doctoral Level         $500,000
    A gift of $500,000 would establish a fellowship to provide a stipend for a graduate student pursuing doctoral-level work within public health.

    Endowed Graduate Fellowships — Master's Level         $250,000
    A gift of $250,000 would establish a named graduate fellowship in public health that would help offset the cost of tuition for a master's student. Such funds will allow Brown to attract — and compete for — the brightest new talent for its master's programs in public health.

    A gift of $100,000 will establish a named, endowed scholarship that will exist in perpetuity to provide financial aid to a qualifying MPH or MS student.

    A gift of $50,000 will endow an award for an undergraduate or master's student, providing funding for research and/or teaching activities within public health.

    Public Health Annual Fund Term Fellowship         $25,000
    With a gift of $25,000 or more to the Brown Public Health Annual Fund, a donor can establish a named term fellowship for one year. A specific student will be named to the term fellowship, and biographical information will be provided to the donor. Term fellowships provide an opportunity for a donor to have direct impact on a public health scholar.

  • Endowed Deanship      $5 million
    An endowment gift of $5 million would create a fund to help underwrite the position of dean of the School of Public Health.

    A gift of $5 million would endow the director's position in any of the 10 campus-based Public Health research centers and institutes. Income from the gift would underwrite the activities of the center and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

    Endowed University Professorships     $4 million
    A gift of $4 million will create a named endowed fund to help the University attract and retain the most distinguished scholars and researchers in public health. Endowed professorships are sought in areas such as international health, health disparities, emerging diseases, health promotion, behavioral health, and evidenced-based diagnosis.

    Endowed Professorships     $3 million
    A gift of $3 million will establish a named endowed fund to help Brown reward the accomplishments of current public health faculty and to attract outstanding scholars to the University.

    Endowed Assistant Professorships         $2 million
    A gift of $2 million will help Brown retain the most promising scholar-teachers in the junior faculty by endowing a fund to be awarded to outstanding tenure-track scholars currently on the faculty, usually in the second term of their appointment.

    Endowed Seed Funding         $1 million
    Increasingly, the federal government and other funders require substantial initial data before providing funding for larger-scale projects. A gift of $1 million for an endowed research seed fund would help procure the initial data needed to seek grants from the NIH or other external funding sources.

    Current Use Seed Funding         $250,000
    A current use gift of $250,000 would provide the seed funding needed to procure initial research data and address key public health issues. These initial studies and preliminary data are required to seek grants from the NIH or other external funding sources.

    A gift of $250,000 will create an endowed fund that will support the teaching of one or more courses in public health, helping to underwrite the work of outstanding faculty, supporting course development, curricular innovations, and the development of teaching technologies.

    Current Use Dean's Innovation Fund         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 will provide discretionary current-use funding to the Dean of Public Health to support innovative programs in education and research.

    Current Use Flexible Research/Education Fund         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 will provide current using funding for public health research—and the application of new research findings to the development of innovative public health policy and practice—and for public health education.

Additional Focus Areas

  • The Brown Institute for Brain Science
  • The more than 100 faculty at the Brown Institute for Brain Science (BIBS) are transforming human health, one discovery at a time, through collaborative brain research. Funding for BIBS will support the work of these scientists at one of the world's preeminent brain institutes. The potential payoff is immense: support will build on targeted investments, capitalize on the momentum created by recent breakthroughs, and catalyze the translation of discoveries into practical and effective treatments and innovations.

  • Global Health
  • Brown's biomedical enterprise is dedicated to tackling the most significant international health issues of our time: projects and programs span 33 countries, 28 of which are developing nations. The Global Health Initiative (GHI) serves as both an administrative home and a source of support and synergy for these experiences. Funding will ensure the growth and the enduring quality of the GHI's work by supporting high-impact research, training, and service, and will attract additional gifts and grants.

    Naming the Global Health Initiative         $5 million
    The Global Health Initiative could be renamed in honor of a gift of $5 million. Such a gift will help attract additional funding, generating high-impact research, training, and service on every continent in the world.

    Endowed Directorship         $5 million
    A gift of $5 million would endow the director's position in the Global Health Initiative. Income from the endowment would also underwrite the activities of the center and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

    Endowed Professorship         $3 million
    A gift of $3 million would establish an endowed professorship in a key area of global health. This would enable Brown to recognize a faculty leader in that area, and provide endowment for future recruitment of top talent to Brown University. Endowed professorships are sought in areas such as international health, health disparities, emerging diseases, and health promotion.

    Global Health Partnerships         $3 million
    A gift of $3 million would build upon existing relationships between Brown and strategically selected partners in developing countries to achieve critical goals—goals that would not otherwise be met. Such a gift is an investment in innovative research, effective education, and successful and sustainable interventions. Importantly, funding will not only support current research, education, and service, but will attract additional gifts and grants by catalyzing key projects.

    Endowed Director's Fund for Global Health         $1 million
    A gift of $1 million would provide discretionary funding to the Director of the Global Health Initiative, in support of the core infrastructure of the Initiative necessary to allow faculty and students to execute global outreach and conduct advanced research.

    Endowed Graduate Fellowships         $500,000
    A gift of $500,000 would establish a fellowship to provide a stipend for a graduate student pursuing doctoral-level work with a vested interest in Global Health.

    Current Use Flexible Research Fund         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 would provide current use funding for global health research and the application of new findings to the development of innovative global health policy.

    Travel Funds         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 would establish a named endowment fund to support bilateral travel by students, faculty, and scholars, which is so critical to research and professional development. A 4 gift for this purpose will support travel to international sites or other off-campus research locations, as well as attendance at conferences to present research and gain valuable new perspectives.

    Global Health Medical Scholarship         $100,000
    A gift of $100,000 or more would establish an endowed scholarship fund for outstanding medical students who are participating in the Global Health Scholarly Concentrations Program or have demonstrated a commitment to global health through some other avenue.

    Global Health Fellowships         $10,000
    Gifts of $10,000 or more would provide current use fellowships of up to $3,500 each to undergraduate students, medical students, residents and fellows, and MPH and PhD graduate students across multiple disciplines to support global health research, service, and advocacy activities. Fellowships are awarded competitively three times annually.

    Public Health Annual Fund Term Fellowship         $25,000
    With a gift of $25,000 or more to the Brown Public Health Annual Fund, a donor can establish a named term fellowship for one year. A specific student will be named to the term fellowship, and biographical information will be provided to the donor. Term fellowships provide an opportunity for a donor to have direct impact on a public health scholar.

  • The New Medical School Building
  • Alpert Medical School made history when it opened the doors of its first dedicated home in August 2011. The 140,000-square-foot space, which was featured in the New York Times, has become an energizing force for the School and for Providence’s biotechnology economy. While many of the spaces in the project have been named, several prominent opportunities remain.

  • MD/PhD Program
  • Increasing scholarship funding and stipend support for MD/PhD students is a priority of Alpert Medical School. Establishing an MD/PhD scholarship fund will enable the School to form a full and robust MD/PhD program and to attract the very best students. More broadly, Brown can play a critical role in mitigating the increasing shortage of physician-scientists: funding for the program will support a stream of critically needed, gifted MD/PhD professionals.

    Name the MD/Phd Program        $10 million
    A gift of $10 million would create an endowed fund that would fully support three MD/PhD students per year. By supporting three students, Brown would qualify to become part of the National Institute of Health's Medical ScienceTraining Program (MSTP), a prestigious federal program that provides significant funding and support. Becoming an MSTP-funded institution would greatly enhance Alpert Medical School's program and stature.

    A gift of $1,000,000 will establish a Benefactor's Endowed MD/PhD Student Scholarship, which will provide significant and ongoing scholarship support to aspiring physician-scientists. The gift will help Brown attract top students to the program and enable MD/PhD graduates—freed from the pressure to pay back high levels of debt—to enter research.

    A current use gift of $250,000 (pledged over up to five years) will provide scholarship support to aspiring physician-scientists.

  • Support Women in Academic Medicine
  • Support is needed to retain Brown's female physicians and scientists, and to increase the likelihood that they will advance to senior faculty positions. The Women in Academic Medicine program would provide flexible research funding to junior women faculty who are also responsible for the care of children. Such a program offers a practical intervention to improve promotion, retention, and recruitment of female faculty in the sciences at Brown.

    Endowed Fund for Women in Academic Medicine        $1 million
    A gift of $1 million would support a named $1 million endowed fund, which would enable Brown to give one junior faculty member funding for two years every two years. Funding could be applied to a wide variety of initiatives related to an applicant's research, such as hiring students or technicians, advancing her professional development with course work, or maintaining a research program during a lapse in grant support.

    Current-Use Fund for Women in Academic Medicine         $200,000 over four years
    A current use gift of $200,000 (pledged over up to four years) would enable Brown to support two junior faculty members for two years each. Funding could be applied to a wide variety of initiatives related to an applicant's research.


Annual Fund Giving
