A Summer Fellowship in Primary Care Medicine is sponsored by the Department of Health and funded through the National Health Services Corps. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide students with an opportunity to work in collaboration with other professionals in a multi-disciplinary approach to primary care. Participants, including students of medicine, social work and dentistry, work 3 days a week shadowing physicians and other health professionalism a primary care medical setting, visit a variety of social service agencies, and perform a research project and course work involving primary care medicine. The program lasts for eight weeks and students are paid a stipend. If funding is available, this program will be continued annually.

This program provides an eight week opportunity for first and second year medical students. Students work with a family physician, become familiar with the community service agency network, and complete a group project. Approximately 5 students participate each summer and Brown students are given priority for positions. Stipends are offered.

This project offers first-hand experience in providing health promotion and disease prevention services to medically underserved rural and urban communities. Students generally divide their time between shadowing a physician and working on a project involving health promotion. Most placements are made during the summer and last from 6-8 weeks. Weekly stipends of approximately $300 are provided. This is a joint program of the National Health Service Corps and the American Medical Student Association and is open to US medical students. Brown students often participate in this program during the summer break in between first and second years.

This is a highly competitive scholarship program available for medical students truly interested in the primary care specialties and committed to serving part or all of their career in a health professional shortage area. It offers payment of tuition, fees, books, supplies for up to four years of education and is eligible to US citizens attending a US school of allopathic or osteopathic medicine. For each year of support, students are required to serve one year in a health professional shortage area upon completion of training.

In exchange for agreeing to provide primary care services in a professional shortage area for a minimum of 2 years, the NHSC repays a substantial portion of medical school loans. Unlike the scholarship program, the loan repayment does not require commitment while attending medical school.

The Pisacano Scholars program is designed to reimburse a portion of medical school related debt for students who will become leaders in family practice. The program is extremely competitive and awards up to 10 scholarships per year with a maximum value of $50,000 each. A portion of the scholarship is paid during medical school and the remainder during the required three year residency. Students must make a commitment to the specialty of family practice. The Foundation is especially interested in students who exhibit the highest levels of skill, compassion and leadership.
