Course Location:     Rhode Island Hospital (this is the primary home for the residency in surgery)

When Offered:     All year

Maximum Students per Rotation:     2

Duration of Rotation:     2-4 weeks

Type of Rotation:     Ambulatory, Consultation Service

Cognitive Content:     Students are expected to broaden and deepen their understanding of general surgical problems and develop a logic problem-solving approach.

Prerequisites:     Completion of Year III including Clerkships in Medicine and Surgery

Criteria for Passing:     Regular attendance, punctuality, satisfactory knowledge of surgery, satisfactory ability to apply surgical principles to clinical situations, satisfactory clinical abilities.

Criteria for Honors:     As above, with demonstration of superior knowledge, clinical skills and abilities by the end of the course.

Competencies:     Ability IV: advanced level, Ability IX: advanced level

Number of Hrs/Wk of Classroom/Discussion:        5

Number of Nights Oncall per Week:     None

Planned Independent Projects for Students:     Only clinical projects are encouraged, with faculty guidance and supervision

Description:      Students will spend time with course leader and faculty in conference, operating room, wards, ambulatory setting discussing application of surgical principles.

Restricted: This is a subinternship and therefore requires a firm committment. Students cannot cancel this rotation within 90 days of it's start date.
