Cognitive Content: Reading , as appropriate to specific patient encounters, monographs, current and historical sources of journal articles and surgical anatomy/procedure atlases.
Prerequisites:Clerkship in Surgery
Criteria for Passing:Function as subintern with respect to diligence, motivation, attention to detail, care of and knowledge of patients assigned to care.
Criteria for Honors:All of the above and additional effort in terms of hours, preparation for OR questions, full preparation for journal club and functional level of PGY1 by direct comparison.
Competencies:Ability IV: advanced level
Number of Hrs/Wk ofClassroom/Discussion: 4-5 plus OR time
Number of Nights Oncall per Week: 3-4
Planned Independent Projects for Students: if desired; can research selected clinical topic of relevance
Description:This elective will provide an opportunity for selected medical students to obtain additional intensive clinical experience in the field of general surgery. The student will have increased responsibility for the care and management of patients on the general surgical service of the Miriam Hospital under close supervision of the chief resident and attending staff. Close personal involvement with the patients will encourage the student's decision making and technical skills.
Restricted: This is a subinternship and therefore requires a firm committment. Students cannot cancel this rotation within 90 days of it's start date.
