Type of Rotation: Consultation Service

Cognitive Content: Bedside (ICU, floor) didactic sessions, active intraoperative participation, mortality and morbidity conferences, lectures, assigned reading related to specific patients, rounds presentations.

Prerequisites: Clerkship in Surgery

Criteria for Passing: Acquaintance with pathophysiology of congenital and acquired heart disease, understanding of required preoperative evaluation including interpretation of angiograms, cath data, x-rays, echocardiograms.

Criteria for Honors: Demonstration of understanding of altered preoperative physiology and development of appropriate therapeutic and diagnostic approaches to the patient.

Competencies: Ability II: advanced level, Ability IV: advanced level, Provisionally approved

Number of Nights Oncall per Week: 3

Planned Independent Projects for Students: None

Description: Preoperative evaluation of cardiac surgical patients, participation in cardiac operations, perioperative management, combined cardiac cath conferences.
