Course Location:     Rhode Island Hospital/other sites

When Offered:     This elective requires a 4-5 hour weekly commitment every week

Maximum Students per Rotation:     12

Duration of Rotation:     24-48 weeks (or longer)

Type of Rotation:     Ambulatory/Primary care

Cognitive Content:     Weekly conferences/case discussions.  Readings in Primary Care Pediatrics, Behavioral-Developmental Pediatrics, Maltreatment, Adolescent Medicine, etc.  Skill-based learning from following a panel of your own patients over time in a longitudinal experience.

Prerequisites:     Clerkship in Pediatrics and Medicine

Criteria for Passing:     Consistent attendance (75-90% of sessions), concise presentations, solid fund of knowledge, ability to interact/communicate effectively with patients and staff.

Criteria for Honors:     Above, plus demonstrated enthusiasm and genuine concern for patients.  Presentations to residents/nurses on common primary care issues.  In depth understanding and success at patient education.

Competencies:     Ability I: advanced level, Ability II: advanced level, Ability IV: advanced level, Ability IX: advanced level, Provisionally approved

Number of Hrs/Wk of Classroom/Discussion:        1-3

Number of Nights Oncall per Week:     None; some evenings if desired

Planned Independent Projects for Students:     Ongoing research, patient education on longitudinal basis.

Description:      The student will be directly and primarily responsible for delivering primary care to a panel of pediatric patients under the supervision of an experienced mentor.
