Cognitive
Content: The elective will
provide experience in the neurological problems of infancy, childhood and
adolescence. Learn how to take a
thorough pediatric neurology history and perform the neurological examination
appropriate for neonates, infants, children and adolescents. Students will be exposed to acute
inpatient problems at Hasbro Children's Hospital Emergency Room, PICU and wards
and the Neonatal ICU at Women and Infant's Hospital. The office and clinic settings will provide exposure to some
of the more common problems in child neurology including epilepsy, headache,
developmental delay, and neurocutaneous disorders as well as the less common
neurodegenerative disorders.
Conferences
include: neurology grand rounds, pediatrics grand rounds, morning report, brain
tumor conference, epilepsy conference, neuroradiology conference and
neuropathology conference.
Prerequisites:
Clerkship in Pediatrics recommended
Criteria
for Passing: Students will be
evaluated based on their performance in the inpatient and outpatient clinical
settings by the supervising attending neurologist and supervising resident.
Criteria
for Honors: Honors grade will
require independent pursuit of additional reference material pertinent to a
clinical problem encountered and demonstration of mastery of that
material.

Independent Projects for Students: Available upon request of the Child Neurology faculty
Description: Supervised evaluation and
management of pediatric neurology inpatient primary and consultation patients,
and of outpatients, through daily ward rounds, weekly Pediatric Neurology

Report (clinical teaching conference), and presentations in outpatient clinics.
