Prerequisites:     Core Clerkship in Medicine

Criteria for Honors:     A student performing at an Honors level will demonstrate a broad fund of knowledge, the ability to take a detailed and accurate history and physical exam, the ability to apply the findings of clinical, laboratory, and diagnostic testing to a comprehensive, cohesive approach to patient care. The Honors student will develop a clear understanding of the power of the physician-patient relationship interaction, as well as the needs and difficulties of caring for an underserved population.

Planned Independent Projects for Students:     No projects are currently planned, but a student certainly would be able to initiate/participate in a project in the clinic setting.

Description: The student will take primary responsibility for evaluating and making treatment plans for new patients and patients seen in follow-up in the GI clinic. This will include assessing laboratory and imaging results, interpreting the results of endoscopic exams, and assessing the response to clinical maneuvers, including dietary and medical therapy, as well as counseling. Students will have the opportunity to see both their own patients in follow-up as well as patients seen by previous students who did the longitudinal.
