Prerequisites: Clerkship in Medicine
Criteria for Passing: Demonstration of an adequate knowledge base for the assessment and diagnosis of basic hematologic abnormalities such as anemia, thrombocytopenia and coagulation disorders. Familiarity with the natural history of basic hematologic disorders.
Criteria for Honors: Superior fund of knowledge and diagnostic skills in hematology as judged by clinical faculty.

Description: The goal of this elective is to provide the student with an introduction to clinical hematology. The student will participate in the care of patients with a variety of malignant and non-malignant blood disorders. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills at reviewing peripheral blood smears and understanding the differential diagnosis of basic hematologic abnormalities. The forum for most didactic teaching will be clinical rounds and outpatient clinic experiences. Case review conferences comprise approximately 3 hours/week and specific didactic conferences on selected topics will be arranged on a weekly basis. Outpatient clinic time is approximately 9-12 hrs/week.
