Duration of Rotation: 2-4 weeks

Type of Rotation: Consultation Service

Cognitive Content: Understanding of basic gynecologic principles and an amplification of understanding of pelvic prolapse and urinary dysfunction.

  1. Understand the differential diagnosis or urinary and bowel incontinence and the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms.
  2. Understand and describe urodynamic evaluation of lower urinary tract function, including office cystoscopy.
  3. Understand and apply non-invasive therapy for bowel and bladder incontinence.
  4. Understand the non-surgical procedures available for treatment of various varieties of pelvic prolapse with associated bowel and bladder dysfunction.

Prerequisites: Completion of Year III

Criteria for Passing: Active involvement as well as demonstration of gynecological exam skills and differential diagnosis.

Criteria for Honors: Evidence of independent reading and scholarship.

Competencies: Ability II: intermediate/advanced level, Ability IV: intermediate/advanced level

Number of Hrs/Wk of Classroom/Discussion: Two weekly conferences and daily discussions

Number of Nights On call per Week: None

Planned Independent Projects for Students: One or two case presentations.

Description: Student's primary activity will be interacting with the instructor and urogynecological patients in an ambulatory setting and in the operating room. Students will be exposed to problems of female urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse in women aged 18–90. Students will also have the opportunity to understand issues concerning the elderly (geriatric) population.
