Cognitive Content:     The goal of the Gastroenterology Elective at the Providence VAMC is to provide the student with an understanding of the pathophysiology and practical management of a wide range of GI diseases, including peptic ulcer disease, GI bleeding, GI neoplasms, inflammatory bowel disease, GERD, acute and chronic liver disease, ascites, pancreatic disease, malabsorbtion and maldigestion. These diseases will be discussed in the context of laboratory, endoscopic, histopathologic, and radiographic findings.

Prerequisites:     Clerkship in Medicine

Criteria for Passing:     Students are evaluated on their general knowledge, enthusiasm, progress in both understanding the physiology and pathophysiology of GI diseases, application of knowledge to developing appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans for patients, and evidence for a humanistic approach to medicine and patients.

Criteria for Honors:     Evidence for exceptional and consistently superior approach to patients and disease processes as described above.

Competencies:     Ability III: advanced level, Ability IV: advanced level

Description:      Patients will be seen in a busy outpatient clinic, and as inpatient consultations. All cases will be discussed, including lab and radiographic findings, with the fellow, and presented to the attending at daily or tri-weekly attending rounds. Pertinent references will be discussed, as well as practical management. Students will observe their full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The student may be asked to review the literature and make small presentations to the group. Students will attend all section conferences, including weekly GI-Surgical Conference, Pathology Conference, Pathophysiology, Journal Club, and Research Conference.
