Cognitive Content:     The course is to give the student an understanding of the mechanism of G.I. disease, and how to approach it. The student will see a number of types of gastrointestinal diseases and through interaction with the fellow and attending, will learn therapeutic modality.

Prerequisites:     Clerkship in Medicine

Criteria for Passing:     Passing grade will require a minimum of seeing 4 patients a week, to be able to present them fully to the attending and to the resident, be able to answer questions that will be asked about the approach to the patient. It will also be based on resident's ability to answer questions on rounds in the interest of the subject.

Criteria for Honors:     The student should have more than a passing knowledge or understanding of the gastrointestinal process, be able to offer suggestions and direct completely the work-up and the treatment of the patient.

Competencies:     Ability I: intermediate level, Ability II: advanced level, Ability IV: advanced level, Ability IX: advanced level, Provisionally approved

Planned Independent Projects for Students:     Students will be asked to present updates on certain aspects of gastroenterology to the attending physician.

Description:      Student will see patients and discuss them with the fellow, make rounds with the attending and the student will attend endoscopy procedures and attend various radiology pathology, and physiology conferences given by the department.
