Content: Students will be given a reading packet of articles
and will have one-on-one didactic daily teachings with one of the staff
hand surgeons. Didactic lectures
on common problems in hand surgery will also be given to the students. Two books, on common hand problems, will
be given to all students.
Prerequisites: Clerkship in Surgery
Criteria
for Passing: Understanding basic principles related to common hand
disorders and how to diagnose these clinically. Satisfactory attendance.
Understanding of the imperative issues of each operation that the
student assists in.
Criteria
for Honors: Demonstration of advanced understanding of anatomy
and how this relates to clinical problems. Mastering reading lists and lecture materials. Motivation to think clinical problems
through without prompting. Interest
and ability during operative procedures.

Independent Projects for Students:
Students may participate in and/or organize a clinical
research project with help from one of the staff hand surgeons. Several peer reviewed publications have
been published by Brown medical students undertaking such study during the
scope of this rotation.
Description: The student will actively participate in the evaluation
and treatment of problems related to the hand and elbow and participate
in surgical operations. Should
the student desire, advanced work involving clinical research or basic science
research may be organized with the goal of providing more complete understanding
of a clinical problem and eventual publication of the summarized results.
