Prerequisites:     Standing in School of Medicine

Criteria for Passing:     Attendance and meaningful participation in at least three quarters of the sessions, representative review of the literature, good description of the issue and thoughtful analysis of ethical issues.

Criteria for Honors:     Active participation with insightful contributions in seminar, thorough review of the literature, extensive description of the issues and convincing analysis of ethical issues based on rigorous critique and argumentation, presented in a clear, well-written paper.

Competencies:     Ability VIII: -intermediate level

Number of Nights Oncall per Week:     None

Description:     Students will explore current ethical controversies in health care policy through reading, seminar discussion, and writing.  Topics will vary according to the interests of the students, but will typically include health care as a right, conflicts of interest, for-profit health care, and aspects of managed care.  Each student will select one topic for in-depth review in the literature.  The students will present their topic in the seminar for discussion and write a 5-10 page paper on the subject.
