Duration of Rotation:     4-8 weeks

Type of Rotation:     Inpatient general

Cognitive Content:     Students will acquire a fundamental understanding of the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease and surgical interventions, aortic and mitral valvular disease with the various options of repair and replacement therapy, management of acute and chronic bacterial endocarditis, and an exposure to congenital cardiac disease.

Prerequisites:     Clerkship in Surgery, cardiology experience preferred

Criteria for Passing:     Student must do oral presentations.  He/she will be expected to demonstrate understanding of the fundamental pathophysiology of congential and acquired cardiac disease.

Criteria for Honors:     Student will demonstrate a level of knowledge acquisition and technical skills consistent with the successful initiation of an Internship in Surgery by the conclusion of the rotation.

Competencies:     Ability II: advanced level, Ability IV: advanced level, Ability IX: advanced level

Description:     This course is designed to expose each student to the broad range of surgical cardiac diseases, but with the opportunity for the student to identify a special area within cardiac surgery for emphasis.
