Duration of Rotation:     4-8 weeks

Type of Rotation:     Consultation Service (inpatient and ambulatory clinic)

Cognitive Content:     This elective provides the student with experience involving bedside teaching, small group discussions, and informal conferences with members of the Cardiology staff. Interpretation of electrocardiograms are done on a one-on-one basis with a full-time member of the Cardiology staff. The elective emphasizes disease pathophysiology, rational approach to therapy including preventive aspects of cardiovascular disease management, clinical cardiac pharmacology, and important drug interactions.

Prerequisites:     Clerkship in Medicine

Criteria for Passing:     An effective and competent performance, interpretation of electrocardiograms, effective presentation and discussion of cases, and presentation of a least one seminar at the end of the completion of the elective.

Criteria for Honors:     Outstanding performance and good recommendations from supervising Cardiology staff physicians and Cardiology fellows as well as excellence in presentation of the seminars and interpretation of complex electrocardiograms.

Competencies:     Ability III: advanced level, Ability IV: advanced level, Ability V: advanced level, Provisionally approved

Number of Hrs/Wk of Classroom/Discussion:        4

Number of Nights Oncall per Week:      None

Description: The student will participate in the daily rounds on the consultation service and in the coronary care unit and will see patients in an outpatient setting. Students will attend educational conferences and will be exposed to both non-invasive and invasive methods of cardiac evaluation.
