Prerequisites:     Clerkship in Medicine

Cognitive Content:     This elective will provide adult clinical cardiology experience similar to a subspecialty rotation during internship. Participants will evaluate patients in the E.R. and on the wards, perform a detailed H & P, outline a diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan, and provide daily follow-up in conjunction with the Cardiology Fellow and attending. Emphasis will be placed on the participants direct involvement in patient care as well as a broad exposure to all of the invasive and non-invasive modalities used in adult cardiology.

Criteria for Passing:     An effective and competent performance, including attendance and participation in divisional conferences, and a good recommendation by the supervising Fellow and attending physicians.

Criteria for Honors:     Outstanding performance of required duties and additional journal readings and projects, based on the recommendation of the service attending and Fellow.

Competencies:     Ability II: advanced level, Ability III: advanced level, Ability IV: advanced level, Provisionally approved

Number of Hrs/Wk of Classroom/Discussion:        4-6

Number of Nights Oncall per Week:     Optional

Description:      Student's primary activity will be daily rounds on the cardiology services with attending and fellows—follow individual patients as if an intern; participate in divisional educational/clinical conferences; exposure to catheterization, surgery, angioplasty, echo and nuclear studies.
