Type of Rotation: Inpatient consultative
Cognitive Content: The student will be providing patient care, as well as working as a consultant on suspected child abuse cases.
Prerequisites: Pediatric clerkship, Year IV status
Criteria for Passing: The student will demonstrate knowledge of documenting a child abuse case, interviewing of a family, the basics of child interviewing, how to be an expert witness, and performing a colposcopy to diagnose sexual abuse.
Criteria for Honors: Active participation, excellent review of literature and a well-written comprehensive case write up, demonstration of excellent patient-care skills, active participation in the community.
Competencies: Ability V: intermediate/advanced level, Ability VII: advanced level, Provisionally approved
Planned IndependentProjects: Research one aspect of a complex child abuse case and prepare a short discourse involving literature search.
Description: Students will diagnose and treat child maltreatment and work with child protective services in the State of Rhode Island. Students will undertake consults in regard to suspected child abuse, participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, and visit child protection agencies.
