Course Location: Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Brown Medical School, Rhode Island
Hospital. Students will spend some time at the Miriam Hospital, as well. Biomed
634, the diagnostic imaging elective at the Miriam hospital has been wrapped
into biomed 629, and is no longer offered as a separate course.

Duration of Rotation: 2-4 weeks-however, all students must
begin at the start of a four week elective block

Service
Cognitive Content: 10 - 15 hours of
lectures per week, along with assigned reading material, teaching files and
audiovisual seminars. The lectures are given the first two weeks of each
elective block.
Prerequisites: Completion of Year II
Criteria for Passing: A student who
demonstrates knowledge of common imaging work ups and can identify common
imaging findings. The Passing student also participates in lectures and
clinical rotations through the department. Assessment is made via student
performance on clinical rotations and didactic sessions. There is no formal
written or oral examination. Excellent attendance is expected, as there are 11
different areas to which the students are exposed. Exceptions made on a case by
case basis [including sickness and longitudinal rotations].
Criteria for Honors: An interested, motivated
student who demonstrates an excellent knowledge of imaging work ups and an
excellent eye for imaging findings. The Honors student also actively
participates in lectures and clinical rotations through the department. Assessment
is made via student performance on clinical rotations and didactic sessions.
Perfect attendance is expected, with exceptions made on a case by case basis
[including sickness and longitudinal rotations].
Competencies: Ability II: intermediate and advanced level.
Number of hrs/wk of classroom/discussion: approximately 10 —15 hours.
Number of Nights on-call per week: None.
Planned Independent Projects for Students: Case presentations.
Description: This is a highly structured
course directed towards teaching students appropriate imaging work ups and
image interpretation [with emphasis on conventional radiographs]. This course
is geared towards those wishing basic exposure to the wide variety of
diagnostic radiology studies and modalities. This course is appropriate for
those contemplating Diagnostic Radiology as a career choice. These goals are
accomplished via audiovisual tapes, teaching files [conventional, internet and
CD-roms], medical student directed lectures, attendance at departmental
lectures, and rotations through most of the sections of the Department of
Diagnostic Imaging at Brown University [predominantly at Rhode Island
Hospital]. When there are less than 3 students, lectures will be replaced with
additional clinical rotations and departmental lectures. Refer to
