Course Location: Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island

When Offered: All year

Maximum Students per Rotation: 2

Duration of Rotation: 2-4 weeks

Type of Rotation: Hospice inpatient, home hospice and hospice in the nursing home.

Prerequisites: Completion of the Clerkship in Medicine

Competencies: Ability I: intermediate level; Ability VIII: intermediate level

Criteria for Honors: The student will be considered for honor based on demonstrated excellence in written communication, verbal communication, active involvement in the interdisciplinary team and demonstrated empathic communication with patients and families.

Number of Hrs/Wk of Classroom/Discussion: 4 hrs/week

Number of Nights On call per Week: 0

Description: The student will participate as members of the hospice interdisciplinary team. They will have the opportunity to work with nurses, chaplains, and social workers in addition to physicians in a number of different settings. Students will be offered and opportunity to work on specific performance improvement projects related to hospice and palliative care. The goal would be to identify opportunities for improvement in the care of terminally ill patients.
