House Officer Facilities
Research Labs - The Orthopaedic Research Labs provide an extensive array of opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows and clinicians to participate in research projects in many areas of Orthopaedics. The research labs consist of 12, 000 completely new laboratory space which is divided into molecular biology, cell biology and bioengineering. There is a space in the lab which permits residents the ability to practice surgery on banked specimens, including arthroscopy. We are about to add another 6,000 feet to the laboratory which is solely utilized for the use of the orthopaedic faculty and residents.

Library - Rhode Island hospital presently maintains an outstanding reference resource in Peters Health Sciences Library. A collection of over 20,000 volumes, augmented annually, and 600 journals in all major specialties, render this library an invaluable on-site asset to the residency program. Audiovisual software and access to MEDLINE and other reference data bases maintained by the National Library of Medicine are available through on-line computer and CD-ROM searches. Computer courses are available through the library for house staff and faculty.
Children's Day Care - Built by the Rhode Island Hospital and Women and Infants' Hospital, this beautiful day care facility can accommodate up to 100 children from the age of six weeks to six years old, and includes a kindergarten. Frequently parents drop in during their lunch hours or work breaks to visit. 
Fitness Center - The Fitness Center, staffed by an exercise physiologist and aerobic instructors, is located on the fifth floor of the Gerry House and is open to all Rhode Island Hospital employees and medical staff. The Department of Orthopaedics currently provides each resident with a yearly membership to the Fitness Center, which entitles them to the unlimited use of exercise equipment, including the squash court, free weight area, lockers, and shower facilities.
Gerry House - The Gerry House is reserved for the use of all house officers, medical students and other student interns. Comfortable lounges, television room, and utility kitchens are provided for the on-call physicians. 
Resident Library - The Department staff office furnishes the residents with state-of-the-art computers; its own core library; and provides secretarial assistance with academic office work.
Brown Facilities
Physicians training in Brown affiliated residency and fellowship programs are issued a Brown University Identification card and have access to the facilities of Brown University and the School of Medicine.
The Sciences Library - The Sciences Library is a primary science and medicine resource center for students and faculty. This building houses Brown University's book and periodical collections in astronomy, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, engineering, botany, biology, medicine, and psychology. Material at other institutions can be obtained through an inter-library loan arranged by reference librarians. In addition, MEDLINE, a bibliographic retrieval system, provides rapid access to citations from over 1,200 biomedical journals.
The Library System - The entire University library system contains more than 4,000,000 items and is composed of the following libraries: John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library - Humanities, Social Sciences and Fine Arts; John Hay Library - Archives and Special Collections, including the Annmary Brown Memorial of early printed books; John Carter Brown Library - Early Americana; Sciences Library.- Science and Medicine; Orwig Music Library - Music: Art Slide Library - Art slides and Photographs.
Biomedical Center - The "Biomed" Center houses the basic science faculty, the International Health Institute, the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research, and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, as well as the Multidisciplinary Teaching Laboratory (MDL), the Animal Care Facility, and a four-story research tower. A six-story addition to the Biomedical Center, the Grimshaw.Gudewicz Medical Building provides additional research and teaching laboratories, facilities for electron microscopy equipment, and additional lecture, classroom, and office space.
Athletics and Computers - Brown University also offers numerous educational, recreational and cultural opportunities. These facilities include: indoor and outdoor athletic facilities (swimming, squash, indoor and outdoor tennis, track, weightlifting, etc.), the Brown Bookstore and Brown Computer Store, which offer discounts on textbooks and computers for faculty/residents, free access to the Brown computer network and the Internet, The Brown Learning Community, and many music, theater, film and dance performances on the Brown campus.
