$2.2 Million Grant to Study Prevention of Post-traumatic Osteoarthritis |
| |
The Co-Principal investigators are Braden Fleming, PhD and Gregory Jay, MD, PhD. Braden Fleming, PhD, a leading orthopaedic researcher in the study of knee joint injuries and arthritis, will lead this study to develop what they hope to be a prevention for post-traumatic OA.
Fleming comments, “We anticipate that through this study, we will be able to advance clinical knowledge of the use of lubricin in treating traumatic injuries to joints, which may prevent the development of OA later. This will have major implications in how these injuries are treated and the prognoses not only for service men and service women, but the general population as well.”

Dr. Christopher Born is featured in the May 18th article, Charity Funds Combat Wound Research, at Military.com.
"Born is one of two doctors partly funded by the public charity to develop new ways to treat combat troops' wounds to prevent or lessen the severity of amputations. His work involves layering pins and rods used to hold together shattered bone with an antimicrobial coating to stave off infection while limbs heal."
"Born is currently testing his treated rods on goats and should know by August when the research can move on to human testing. Funding for that phase will come not only from the foundation, but from the DoD, he said."

20th, 2010 Brown welcomes the ABC Traveling Fellows |
| |
The concept of the American, British, Canadian (ABC) Exchange Fellowship was developed in 1948 by Robert I. Harris of Toronto, Canada, during his presidency of The American Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Harris believed that because of World War II and the accompanying post-war difficulties, young orthopaedic surgeons of Great Britain would find it difficult, if not impossible, to visit orthopaedic centers in the United States and Canada. Dr. Harris stated “There was a danger that they would reach senior positions in England with little knowledge of the state of orthopaedic surgery in North America.” It was for that reason Dr. Harris proposed the 1948 meeting in Quebec City be a joint British-Canadian-American Meeting. Thirteen British Orthopaedic Surgeons were brought over to attend the joint meeting and to travel throughout the United States and Canada. The thirteen original traveling fellows were: J. Crawford Adams, Esq., J. Charnley, Esq., F.C. Durbin, Esq., James S. Ellis, Esq., T. John Fairbank, Esq., C. Langton, Esq., Philip H. Newman, Esq., J. Patrick, Esq., Miss Marion A. Pearson, I.S. Smillie, Esq., Edgar Somerville, Esq., Frederick G. St. Clair Strange, Esq., and James Wishart, Esq.
Today, the ABC Fellowship remains the most prominent traveling fellowship in orthopaedics and serves to identify the future leaders of the specialty and acts as a catalyst to accelerate their careers.

Our recent visit from the RRC in August 2006 resulted in the RRC, at their October meeting, granting our program an increase in resident complement.
