Introduction

The Sports Medicine Fellowship involves a one-year experience of intensive post-residency training in disorders specifically related to the injured athlete. The fellowship will be participating in the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Match process and is ACGME accredited. The goal for this fellowship is to provide the didactic, clinical, and operative experiences necessary for the fellow to become expert in the diagnosis, operative and non-operative treatment, and post-operative rehabilitation of sports related injuries and ultimately, to have the knowledge, skills and ability to contribute to their profession from a clinical and scholarly perspective. The emphasis of the fellowship is equally shared by clinical responsibilities and academic investigation into both clinical and basic science problems. Our interest is in training surgeons who will undertake some form of academic activity after they have finished their fellowship thereby contributing to the knowledge base of Sports Medicine.

Clinical Practice

The Division of Sports Medicine maintains a busy practice with five orthopedic Sports attendings. Outpatient clinic experience will be obtained at two locations. The fellow will be responsible for seeing patients in a private office setting at the Butler campus (outpatient offices) every Monday. Additionally, the fellow is responsible for the Sports Medicine clinic at the Outpatient Orthopaedic Clinics (Rhode Island Hospital). This is an afternoon clinic twice a month with an average patient volume of 15-20 patients per clinic.

A large physical therapy division located on site at both office locations ensures the fellow will have constant interaction with therapists and the monitoring of patient progress.

Operative experience is designed for the fellow to obtain skill and proficiency in diagnostic and operative arthroscopy, and open sports medicine procedures (examples of open procedures would include open shoulder stabilization, ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction of the elbow, distal biceps tendon repair, medial and lateral ligament reconstruction and/or repair of the knee, patellar stabilization, and Achilles tendon repair). The Fellow operates every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, as well as every other Tuesday, rotating daily between four of the Sports attendings.

Numerous opportunities exist for the Sports Fellow to participate with athletic teams including: local high schools, Brown University Division 1 Athletics and the Providence Bruins Professional Hockey Team (AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins). Opportunities include pre-participation physical examinations, training room clinics and game coverage. In addition to this, two to three nights a week will involve participation in training room clinics both at the collegiate and professional levels.

Since the Department has a large and active residency program, the fellow is expected to teach and direct the resident staff in both the hospital care of inpatients and the clinical care, both operative and nonoperative, of outpatients.

Research

The fellow will be required to complete at least one supervised independent research project suitable for peer review publication, and will also be expected to publish one clinical / review article. The Division maintains an active Sports research program under the direction of Braden Fleming, PhD with several Brown University undergraduates, medical students and residents undertaking projects concurrently. Ample support for supplies and equipment as well as technical support is available in both the Division's Laboratory as well as orthopaedic research laboratories in general.  The fellow will also assist in journal article reviews with Dr. Fadale.

The Details

The salary is determined by level of training (PGY year) and in accordance with the Rhode Island Hospital Department of Graduate Medical Education. Additional compensation is available including, but not limited to, health, dental, life insurance and disability insurance. The fellow is allowed to attend either the annual meeting of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) or the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). The fellow will also be required to serve as an Associate Master Instructor for one of the Residents Basic Arthroscopy courses during the year at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Chicago. The fellowship year is from August 1 to July 31 of the following year. Two weeks of vacation are provided (not including the meeting trip) and some flexibility is available should job interview requirements arise.
