Introduction
The Sports Medicine Fellowship involves a one-year experience of intensive post-residency training in disorders specifically related to the injured athlete. The fellowship participates in the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Match process and is ACGME accredited.
The Brown University Sports Medicine Fellowship is intended to be a mentorship experience for the fellow. The fellow will play an active role in the management of injured athletes and is a critical member of the Sports Medicine team. The goal for this fellowship is to provide the didactic, clinical, and operative experiences necessary for the fellow to become expert in the diagnosis, operative and non-operative treatment, and post-operative rehabilitation of sports related injuries and ultimately, to have the knowledge, skills and ability to contribute to our profession from a clinical and scholarly perspective. Team coverage opportunities include over 30 Brown University Division 1 Athletic Teams and the Providence Bruins (AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins) Professional Hockey Team. The emphasis of the fellowship is clinical; however academic investigation into clinical or basic science problems is required. The sports medicine fellow will work with fellowship trained and board-certified sports medicine orthopedic surgeons as well as other faculty in University Orthopedics. This includes the opportunity to participate in complex knee and shoulder surgery, elbow surgery / arthroscopy, and exposure to both general pediatric sports medicine problems as well as hip arthroscopy. In addition, there is ample opportunity for an independent surgical experience for the Fellow. Academic investigation opportunities include both clinical research and basic science research in the University Orthopedics / Department of Orthopedics laboratories with either new or contribution to ongoing projects. The fellow will not be responsible for hospital on-call or trauma call coverage during their fellowship year.
The Brown University Medical School and Department of Orthopedic Surgery have a long tradition of actively seeking underrepresented minorities for inclusion & advancement. Our sports medicine fellowship program continues this tradition and encourages such candidates through notification on our fellowship website and San Francisco Match website.
