Paul Fadale, M.D.

After completing both his internship and residency at Brown University, Dr. Fadale completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship in Baltimore and a Trauma/Sports Medicine Fellowship in Switzerland. Before returning to Brown University as the Chief of Sports Medicine, he served as a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Fadale is the Head Team Physician for the Providence Bruins Professional Hockey Team, Brown University Athletics and previously the U.S. Figure Skating Finals. He has taught / lectured at AO (trauma), AANA (arthroscopy) , AOSSM (sports medicine) and AAOS (orthopaedic surgery) surgical educational courses. Dr. Fadale is a graduate of the State University of New York. He has participated in several radio and television presentation including the Cable News Network (CNN). His research and publications cover a wide range of athletic injuries.


3Braden C. Fleming , Ph.D.
Lucy Lippitt Professor of Orthopaedics

Dr. Fleming joined the Department of Orthopaedics at Brown University in June 2003. He received his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Vermont in 1996 and then served on the faculty of the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation at the University of Vermont. His primary research interests focus on the lower extremity and spine with a particular interest in knee and soft tissue biomechanics, and biomedical instrumentation. Recent projects include the in vivo strain measurements of the human anterior cruciate ligament, the development of an experimental model to investigate graft healing and the progression of osteoarthritis following ACL injury and reconstruction, tissue engineering methods to stimulate ligament healing, and the in vivo measurement of the forces and motion of spinal implants. He has received several awards for his research including the ACL Study Group Traveling Fellowship (2010); The Cabaud Research Award (2009) and the O'Donogue Research Award (2005) of the American Orthopaedics Society of Sports Medicine; the Bruce Selya Research Award of Lifespan (2005), GOTS-Beiersdorf Research Award (2000), the American Society of Biomechanics Post-doctoral Young Scientist Award (1999), the Albert Trillat Young Investigator Award (1997), and the Kappa Delta Award of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (1994).

1Michael J. Hulstyn, M.D.

Dr. Hulstyn was an undergraduate at the University of California at Davis and Brown University. Postgraduate medical education includes residency at the University of California at San Diego and Brown University, and a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. He is a Team Physician for Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, and the Providence Bruins Professional Hockey Club, providing care to interscholastic, intercollegiate and professional athletes. His research interests include clinical and basic science projects studying sports-related injuries to the shoulder and knee.


2James O. Maher III, M.D.

A graduate of New York Medical College, Dr. Maher completed his orthopaedic residency training at the same university. He then spent four years on active duty with the US Navy stationed at Newport Naval Hospital. In addition to being the Naval Academy Preparatory Team Physician, he served in Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War. Currently, his team physician responsibilities include Salve Regina University, Roger Williams University, St. George's School and Rogers High School. He is the orthopaedic consultant for the Newport Tennis Hall of Fame (ATP Tournament), Newport Jai Alai, and USGA Amateur Tournament. Dr. Maher practices both in Newport and Providence.

David Paller, MS is a senior research associate for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Warren Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University and the test facility manager at the RIH Orthopaedic Foundation. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research at regional, national, and international conferences. His current research interests include the biomechanical properties of soft tissue ACL reconstruction, fracture kinematics, gapping characteristics of various rotator cuff repair techniques, the effect of implant material design on various biomechanical properties in the musculoskeletal system.

3David Pezzullo, MS, PT, SCS, ATC

Mr. Pezzullo received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Connecticut and an advanced Masters of Science degree in Sports and Orthopedic Physical Therapy from the University of Pittsburgh.  He is a Board Certified Sports Physical Therapy Clinical Specialist by the American Physical Therapy Association as well as a certified athletic trainer by the National Athletic Trainers Association.  He currently serves as the Director of Physical Therapy at University Orthopedics and is an athletic trainer for the University of Rhode Island Men’s Ice Hockey team.  He was a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh for 8 years with a teaching concentration in anatomy and musculoskeletal evaluation and rehabilitation.  He also served as the Medical Communications Manager for the City of Pittsburgh Marathon in 2000 and 2001.  He has published several peer- reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and delivered presentations at several national professional conferences.  Musculoskeletal rehabilitation of the shoulder, knee, spine, foot and ankle are his areas of expertise and clinical interest.

3Jonathan Schiller, M.D.

Dr. Schiller is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Warren Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University and an Attending Physician at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and regional, national, and international presentations related to pediatric orthopaedic care. His current research interests include improving success of limb lengthening procedures, pediatric fracture management, scoliosis, and treatment of the adolescent and young adult hip problems. He was the recipient of the 2007 Peter G. Trafton Research Award for Orthopaedic Trauma and the 2008 Haffenreffer Family House Staff Excellence Award.

3Robert M. Shalvoy, M.D.

Dr. Shalvoy is a graduate of Boston College and UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. He completed an orthopaedic residency at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Shalvoy completed a sports medicine fellowship under Jack C. Hughston, MD at the Hughston Orthopaedic clinic in Columbus, Georgia. He has served as team physician for several major college and professional teams. He is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and is an editorial reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Special interests include throwing injuries of the upper extremity. His publications involve knee ligament reconstruction, knee arthroscopy, the evaluation and treatment of shoulder instability and elbow arthroscopy.

Jeremy Mangion, M.D.
Dr. Mangion earned his undergraduate degree at Columbia University in New York, he then proceeded to medical school at “UMDNJ” -New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ.  Dr. Mangion completed his residency at the New York Medical College – Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY.

Philip Lahey, M.D.
Dr. Lahey earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY; earned his graduate degree at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC then proceeded to Tufts University where he went to Medical School followed by his Internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and completed his residency at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Anthony Avery, M.D.
Anthony Avery, M.D. grew up in Washington, DC.   He earned his undergraduate degree at Villanova University in Villanova, PA and earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.  Dr. Avery completed his residency at the Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ.
