Clinical Practice

The Division of Sports Medicine maintains a busy clinical practice. Outpatient clinic experience will be obtained at the Rhode Island hospital and outpatient clinics. The fellow will be responsible for seeing patients in a private office setting, a hospital sports medicine clinical setting, and athlete training rooms. Physical therapy is located at all office locations and the fellow will have constant interaction with physical therapists and the opportunity of monitoring patient progress.

Operative experience is designed for the fellow to obtain skill and proficiency in diagnostic and operative arthroscopy as well as open surgical procedures. The Division draws surgical patients from the private clinical setting, athletic training rooms, hospital sports medicine clinics, and appropriate surgical cases from our Level I Trauma Center. In general, the fellow will be operating 3 to 4 days a week.

Numerous opportunities exist for the Sports Medicine Fellow to participate with athletic teams including Brown University division 1 athletics and the Providence Bruins Professional Hockey Team (AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins). The Fellow will participate in pre-participation physical examinations, training clinics and game coverage, and medical/surgical management of the athletes as required.

Since the Department of Orthopedics has a large and active residency program, the Fellow is expected to help teach and direct the resident staff in management of injured athletes. This teaching will include a formal Sports Medicine Fellow conference which will include coverage of Sports Medicine curriculum and journal club review. The Fellow will also participate in Orthopedic grand rounds.
