Caroll Silver International Traveling Fellowship
Carroll Silver was the Chief of Orthopaedics, for many years, at The Miriam Hospital. Through his generosity and through the generosity of his wonderful children, June Rogul, Susan Silver and Paul Silver, this fellowship was created in his name, for the Department of Orthopaedics and held by The Miriam Hospital. Each year, a resident or fellow and/or an attending can travel abroad, usually to a developing nation. The concept of the Silver Fellowship is to have the senior resident or fellow, and the attending physician, share their expertise with the physicians in the host country. Our residents, in turn, will not only gain experience in managing orthopaedic conditions that they might never have seen, but they will also have an opportunity to further their technical skills. They will learn different ways to care for injuries other than what they have practiced in a large American University Hospital. This fellowship is available, for a one month period, during their PGY-5 research block or PGY-6 year, provided the resident or fellow has previously and successfully completed ongoing basic research.
In 2008, the first year the fellowship was offered, Dr. Peter Trafton, a trauma attending, went to Malawi with Dr. Mark Tompkins, a PGY-5 resident. This year Dr. Christopher Born went with Dr. Wendell Heard, a trauma fellow, to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
