Tradition and Excellence
The Residency Program has been in existence since 1938, and is one of the four oldest programs in the United States. The Brown University integrated residency in orthopaedics is a five year program based at Rhode Island Hospital. It is followed by one year as a junior attending for which a Trauma Fellowship is awarded. There are typically five residents in each of the six years of the program. Opportunities for both clinical and basic science research are available and each resident spends four to six months in the research laboratory during the PGY-6 year. All graduating residents are required to submit a research paper (laboratory or clinical).

Most of the activities are done in Rhode Island Hospital which is unique because it possesses the only children's hospital in Rhode Island as well as the only level 1 trauma center in Rhode Island. Furthermore, the Orthopaedic staff at Rhode Island Hospital performs an average of 6,700 operations and receives 146,000 visits per year at University Orthopedics, the practice arm of the full-time orthopaedic faculty.
